| Javelina's Full Review: Cooking.com Chrome Banana Holder |
Im a vegetarian, so fruits and veggies are a big part of my diet. When you eat so many fresh foods, its difficult to keep everything from going bad before eating it. What frustrates me is having to throw out uneaten fruits and veggies. Lots of wasted money!
Bananas are of course a great source of potassium, but also fiber and vitamin C. Bananas have tons to offer and are a great dietary supplement. By getting a banana holder, hopefully Im getting some better nutrition by keeping more bananas around!
Bananas
Bananas can be so hard to keep. Theres a very small window of time when the bananas are just ripe, right between the greenish tint stage, and the brown spotty stage!
Putting bananas in the fridge doesnt slow down the ripening process- in fact, it turns them brown and then black. This is good only if youre looking for immediate ripening.
If you lay bananas on a surface, they bruise easily and tend to ripen more quickly.
I consider bananas to be one of the harder-to-keep fruits out there.
The Banana Holder
I have seen other banana holders as well as fruit hammocks. I didnt want the hammock, because it still leaves the fruit in contact with surfaces, as well as with other fruits.
There were a few holders to choose from, but the chrome look was very appealing. I like the simplicity and sophisticated design.
The stand is strong and easy to use. I dont worry about it tipping over or breaking. The hook is small enough so that there isnt any difficulty in hanging the bananas on it.
When youre down to just one banana, theres obviously no way to hang it up on the stand, but thats fine, because it usually gets eaten quickly.
Using the Banana Holder
Make sure that you place the holder in a strategic place. If you have the bananas in the sun, they will ripen faster. Cooler temperatures are ideal.
You simply hang the bananas on the holder, right where they are connected at the top (of course!). Very simple. I find that it does lengthen the life of the bananas. It keeps them off the countertops, and displays them nicely, in almost an artistic sort of manner. The hanger truly makes the bananas look visually appealing!
Price & Where to Purchase
I bought this banana holder at Linens N Things for $12.99. I had a discount, which was an additional incentive. A lot of these home stores have regular coupons (LNT, Bed Bath & Beyond, etc), which make purchases a little easier.

Overall
A banana hanger is a nice investment for those who eat bananas on a regular basis, or for those who want to do so. This is a great investment for the kitchen, and will earn its keep by saving bananas that would easily otherwise go bad from sitting on counters or simply going unnoticed. This banana stand truly makes bananas seem more enticing!
