| ss3goku's Full Review: Devil May Cry for PlayStation 2 |
Ive owned an Xbox ever since it made its debut. I went as far as spending well over $700.00 to purchase the console and a handful of games to go along with it, and I was amazed. However, fast forward to today and I dont seem to feel the same way about it as I did before. Why? Well, its not because I dont like it, surely it had its moment where I snickered and laughed at the other console owners (who doesnt?) but with my recent Xbox purchases, I couldnt help but feel more and more upset when it came to getting my moneys worth.
Now I know, youre probably asking whats the point of this story and where is the Devil May Cry review? Well, just yesterday, I decided to make the bold decision of turning in my XBOX along with all the games and peripherals in which I had owned. It was the very first time I had ever done that, but I decided that I should put all the money I would get from it and put it towards a PS2 and whichever video games I can afford. In the end, I walked out with a PS2, a memory card, Grand Theft Auto III, and of course, Devil May Cry.
In Devil May Cry you play the role of Dante (who is the son of a dark knight called Sparda. Who was known for saving the world from great evil) who runs his own agency, which as you would guess is called Devil May Cry. It isnt until the late hours that a female named Trish convinces Dante to follow her to a mysterious island where only he can cleanse the evil of the spirited and undead because well
that is what he does best.
First thing youll notice about the game is the dark atmosphere, which in this game focuses on 18th century gothic architecture. Upon beginning the game youll take note of the use of light (or of what little they use) to give off a sinister
mood along with habituated rooms that appear as if they are going to fall apart. The characters as well, while not extremely detailed, were created to match the setting of the game by having you go against the undead, phantoms, puppet-like ghouls, and so much more. Only complaint that I have is that the shadows being given off by Dante or the surroundings around him, dont actually show up at times when the room has a fair source of light, which while isnt a noticeable flaw, it still exists.
Control wise, it seems complicated at first, but eventually, its a breeze. I would have wished for Capcom to include a tutorial of some sort for this game. While I personally got the hang of pulling off the combos, I was only aware of them by a simple screen telling me what to do with a simple illustration screenshot of Dante performing it, but I guess gamers should be thankful for that. But the combos, oh man how do I explain them. Imagine a fighting scene from Blade, multiply it by 100, and youll get just half of the action you can do in Devil May Cry, These combos are mostly pulled off using Dantes dual caliber pistols along with his sword which will have you juggling enemies for long periods of time if you desire.
However, while the combo system is quite miraculous, credit does have to go for the sound in the game. Its obvious that with todays games, sound plays a huge impact when playing a video game. For example, Marvel VS Capcom 2 got some negative feedback due to the jazz music being used in a fighting game. However, fear not with Devil May Cry, once you hear the rave techno rock music growing intense through your speakers, you know that youll have company to deal with. Sound effects are basically what you would come to expect with this game, such as bullet shells echoing off as they hit the floor, the wind tearing through Dantes sword, and the grunts and groans youve come to expect while playing this game.
While the game does seem to have a lot to offer, it may not be for everyone. Im not one to decide wither a game is good or not by its length of time, or am I one to judge a game if it is a beat-em-up. I judge games by basically saying to myself Yes, with what this game has to offer, I am enjoying it, and thats exactly what Devil May Cry does. The game does its job by not getting dry by giving you the task of collecting different colored orbs which benefit you by giving you power-ups or making you transform into youre devil form and cause all practically destroy everything in your path. Plus, a really great feature in the game is when you complete a level (mission), you are given a grade (A-D) where A shows you are a master of all trades when it comes to this game, and D means well
.you just plain suck. Overall, it seems that Capcom put in enough for gamers to play with, but if you are not one to improve on your style or collect orbs to obtain new items, then maybe you should reconsider your thought on getting this game.
Therefore, Devil May Cry is a game I would highly recommend. Reason being is that it gives you something new to experience. The design, speed, gameplay, and concept is something Ive never experienced before in a video game. For that reason, while looking beside its diminutive flaws, Devil May Cry is one of a kind.
