Success Defined

May 04 '00

A close friend of mine - we came to college together four years back, she from Stavropol, Russia, and I from Janakpurdham, Nepal, to Berea College in Kentucky, USA - who is graduating from college two weeks from now - I got an year-long extension so I get out in May 2001 - asked me yesterday over e-mail as to how I would define success. I gave her challenge a try and here goes:

(1) Family
(a) Parents, siblings
(b) Husband/wife
(c) Children
(d) Extended family, relatives

It is about intimacy and not intellect. It is not about reading all those child care manuals, although that sure is a plus. It boils down to just being there for them. It boils down to having time to spend with them. It is about being expressive about love. It is about making constant attempts at unconditional love.

(A boyfriend/girlfriend would fit in between, I guess.)

(2) Friends
(a) Constantly making new ones
(b) Keeping in touch with old ones
(c) Keeping in constant touch with the close ones

The people who you can be off guard with. You don't have to behave. You can be rowdy, indecent, revealing and be assured you will not lose face. Thanks to the Internet, the keeping in touch part will get easier, even when friends might move away far and wide. It is about being able to empathize ever afterwards. It is about starting a family and knowing many others like you are going through similar experiences.

(3) Career
(a) Personal satisfaction, intellectual challenge
(b) Material success ... yes, money does matter

To each his or her own. I can't say much here. To each his or her own. As for me, the Internet bug has bit me big and I am going online and I have offered to "hire" absolute any friend who might be interested in my business model (see the epinion called The First Major Informationa Age Company) - I assure long-term telecommuting and total flexibility in terms of time.

(4) Personal growth
(a) Lifelong learning, Keeping the growth curve steep ever afterwards
(b) Spirituality
(c) Health - physical, mental, emotional, social, spiritual

I love music, all genres. I am a Buddhist. I like to read and write. What about you?
