Social and Academic Negatives for Transfer Students

Mar 17 '00

I went to a Community College for a year and decided I wanted to take on the challenge of a four year school. I came to Villanova last Fall. A fairly large complain is academical: only 24 of my 32 credits transferred. Another problem academically is registration, you are put into classes for the first semester (usually the worst professors, or good professors at bad times). The second semester was equally unfair: because the people with more credits register first, I had slim pickings again. For one course I had to take, all of the classes were full except two. I am currently taking a night course, and 8:30s every day. In the business school I am in, students are given laptops. I was given a used computer because it is policy for transfer students to get the computers from the people that transferred last semester.

What is more important to me is the social scene. Villanova has a housing problem, so transfer students are placed in a dorm 3 miles away, given only an unpredictable shuttle service. I got a car for this reason. Although this helps, I have to park about a half mile away. Overall, my experience at the transfer hall has been terrible! Everyone feels that way. Next year, I hope that I am treated like a regular Villanova student, not as a second rate transfer.
