| terence_carter's Full Review: Sony MDBUNDLE4 Personal MiniDisc Player |
The Sony MDBundle4 seemed like the perfect MiniDisc purchase to replace my tapes forever. It included a home component recording unit (MDS-JE510), a portable player (MZ-E40), 2 blank MiniDiscs (60 minutes each) to get started with, and even a coupon for a free car adapter kit (by mail). All of a sudden, with one relatively inexpensive purchase, you have a home MD, a MDMan, and a Car MD player. You're hooked up! But not quite...
Although these components do manage to fulfill many of your MD needs in every space (home, travel, car), they are not high performance at all. The home unit has only simple functions. Even though it's hooked up to a fully Sony system, it can't seem to do synchronized dubbing from other sources. The portable unit is only a player, it doesn't record. While this was acceptable when the MDBundle4 first came out 2 years ago, it's not way outdated. All the portable models today can record as well. And it's big! It's about the size of a regular walkman, while newer models are about 25% smaller and lighter. Also, it sucks up batteries like an electronic vampire. If you're going to use this with any regularity, you'll have to buy a rechargeable battery set or else you'll go broke paying for batteries.
While both components will perform minimum duties, neither one is up to the standards of current technology. I'd advice staying away from the MDBundle4 and simply getting a portable recording unit. They are much smaller and lighter than the MZ-E40 and can record from your home stereo or any other stereo you come across in your travels.
