| sdarlin's Full Review: Motorola StarTAC ST7760 CDMA / AMPS Cellular Phone |
My husband and I both own Star Tac 7760s, and we love them. We decided on the Star Tac because it's very compact. In addition, the spouse wanted a phone he could use in the subway tunnel, and this was it.
I especially like the fact that it's impossible for the phone to turn on by accident and drain the battery. This was a constant problem with my old Ericsson phone.
The Star Tac has a lot of menu features, most of which I'm not familiar with. Did I mention I'm technologically illiterate, and the spouse is worse? We're the types who only read the manual if we're having a problem. But I decided recently, when I got my phone, to program in a few numbers so I wouldn't have to keep dialing. I could never do it again without consulting the manual, but it's nice to have those presets, especially when I need to make a call from the car.
A terrific feature is the recall pound to find out the number of your phone. This is great for the brain dead, but particularly for us, since the spouse and I have the exact same model.
One minor drawback to the Star Tac is its recall feature. My Ericsson would recall four numbers, but the Star Tac only does one.
Also, if you have especially big fingers, this is not the phone for you. The buttons are very small, a consequence, I would imagine, of the size of the phone.
An annoyance that I don't think is unique to the Star Tac is that we are unable to get a usable signal when at home. I think we're on the very edge of the coverage area, even though this has happened with more than one phone on more than one plan.
Finally, the customer service on this phone has been very impressive so far. My husband had a problem where the phone wasn't holding a charge very long, so we tried a new battery and that didn't help. We contacted Motorola and they said we could return the phone to them for warranty repair, or take it to Verizon and get a loaner phone. Verizon, formerly Bell Atlantic, administrates our cellular plan. They provided a loaner with all the same features of his plan. Once they let us know his phone is back from Motorola, we have 10 days to return the loaner. This saves us the hassle of having to return the phone to Motorola, including the interruption in service and the hassle of getting the bill adjusted.
I think the Star Tac is an excellent choice for anyone in the market for a compact phone, other than those with big fingers.
