| dbhoutx's Full Review: Dish Network DishPlayer 500 Channel Satellite Syst... |
Dish network provides several movie packages to compliment your basic programming package. I found that for the price, it did not make sense to pay for the movie packages on Dish network. At $121 for each set of stations or upwards of over $400 per year for all of the movie channels, on a yearly payment basis, I did not see enough good movies I would watch to justify the price. (Note this is the only place I could put this review...since it seems to be the only Dish Network section working today.)
Consider what it costs to rent a movie or view a pay-per-view movie and see how many movies you need to watch before going for a movie package on dish network. When you add it all up, you may find it cheaper to rent those movies you really want to see. With DVD, you get the same digital quality and can rent them many places at reasonable prices.
Another factor is that most of the movies shown on the satellite are available on DVD or VHS now. HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, and the others really do not give the viewer too many movies that are not either available at Blockbuster or via the web from a DVD rental service. Given that DVDs can be rented from someone like netflix.com for only on average a couple dollars per DVD, you can see a lot of new releases for far less than the price paid to dish network.
Dish network is not alone charging what they do for the movie packages. Their prices are competitive with cable and direct tv. That only goes to show that all of them have overpriced their products. Now, as we see more digital cable in our neighborhoods, we will see more of the available movie channels included with the viewing packages. One benefit of getting the movie packages from Dish Network, as opposed to the analog cable companies is the sheer number of channels available.
You are able to get something like 40 channels of movies when you sign up for all of the movie packages. This is great if you have nothing better to do than sit and watch tv all of the time. That of course is becoming a bad habit for Americans.
I see the advertisements that entice folks into buying more than one of the movie packages in order to get a rebate off your dish system. I find that its likely cheaper to just pay for the system. Some of these rebate programs are not all they are cracked up to be. I would look carefully at what you must buy and be careful when signing up. You could easily end up paying much more for programming than you expect and the only benefit is free equipment that can be purchased for only a couple hundred dollars if you shop around.
I am not sure who makes all the money by selling the service at these high prices, but it must be making someone rich. Dish Network sells a movie package that is impressive, has high prices, but when purchased if that is the route you go, produced great quality movies.
