| georgie99999's Full Review: Nokia 3210 GSM Cellular Phone |
The Nokia 3210 is an excellent starter 'phone.
Pluses: Lightish, big SIM memory, looks cool, X-Press Colours...and its a Nokia, so no worries on the reliability front.
Minuses: Bit big, weird shape (more later) reception not *great* neither is battery life.
--------------------------------------------------------
The 3210 is the fave of teenage schoolkids in London right now. Free with some monthly pay plans, 60 ukp with other pre-pay plans, it's small enough and hip enough to suit dads and teens alike. I have some reservations though. Dual band useage is not great by any means - obviously any US bought model won't work on EU GSM, but UK GSM seems weird in EU as well.
Sound quality cuts out as well - particularly - and worryingly - when battery life is lowish. Why worryingly? Because it doesn't deliver the sort of 5 day from charge to recharge that serious professional users demand from their mob/ cell- phone. Look, I don't have a landline these days apart from 'Net calls and I need full performance 24/7. This model did 72 hr max after daily average talktime of 60-90 mins. This is not a good point.
What is good? All the usual features - nice UI, big phone memory for when the SIM runs out, fat screen delivers space for SMS and memory name - but goodness it sticks out in your pocket. The 'fat head' is too wide. Feels like an old brick in your pocket. The unified antennae saves on space but loses on reception quality - I even had an SMS not be delivered with 5 reception bars - which is NOT GOOD. It feels sold and reliable, and the software seems steady enough - no crashes in 3 week's useage so far. Predictive text input is excellent - choose your language! With a sound selection of dictionaries (Dutch, Norwegian, Swedish, etc.) you'll be sending long SMSes quickly, especially if you bother 'teaching' the onboard dictionary your favourite unusual words.
What's new? Picture messaging if your telco supports it, fully upgradable icons/ caller group ringtones mean its a whizz to customise. No IR is a disappointment to me, but maybe you can live without that. Slightly hard to find in-call volume adjustment is a shame after the joys of previous Noks - secret message from your loved one? Can't turn it down with ease in-call!
No WAP and limited support for saving message template means you can't even get round your telco's 2.5G standards by saving the email template of choice - which is a shame.
Games are the usual Nok specials, but with no IR it's no fun!
-------------------------------------------------------------
If all you want to do is make and receive calls and you care little about 'extras' this is a great phone. Just keep a charger with you - and don't trust it for business critical calls away from strong reception. It's perfect for kids or spouses/ partners as a fun, limited use 'phone.
Rating? 3/5 could try harder.
