| reng's Full Review: Nakamichi AV-10 |
After a very extensive search for home theater receivers, the short list came down to the Nakamichi AV-10 and Rotel RSX-965. They both sounded great, but I chose the AV-10 for its gorgeous appearance and ease of use. Frankly, the Rotel receiver looks downright ugly!
The AV-10 sounds very dynamic and detailed. It delivers clean power and lots of it, so that you can drive most any speaker. I auditioned it with Acoustic Energy AE109, B&W 602 S2, Martin Logan, Paradigm Studio 60, PSB Century and Stratus Bronze, so I have a good sense of its capabilities. In the end, I settled on the B&W 600 S2 series of speakers for my home theater. (Plus B&W ASW 2000 subwoofer.) They're an excellent match.
Comments have been made about the "noisy" fan. Yes, it is audible, if the room is dead quiet and you are within a few feet of the unit. But this is most unnatural. If you are sitting this close to the receiver, how can you be properly listening to your speakers? Don't worry about the fan - it's not a problem.
The receiver is excellent for anyone looking for a taste of the best without breaking the bank. You would have to go to separates to get better sound; if so, you had better be rich.
I've had the product for over a year now, and I still love it.
