Sony CCD TRV-87

Feb 14 '00

I love this camcorder!

As soon as I got it, I checked out the low-light sensitivity. I was impressed! You can use the exposure setting to adjust iris from closed to all the way open. If that is not good enough, then you can activate the built in light, which is pretty bright. You can also slow down the shutter speed to make the images brighter, but there is a slight blur when you do this.

Compared to the Sharp ViewCam I had, the image is AMAZING! Both recorded in Hi-8 and were played through my VCR via the RCA inputs. The images are crystal clear, whereas the Sharp's were a bit blurry.

The Steadyshot, Sony's picture stabilization system, is light years better than the Sharp. There is no image quality loss when this is switched on - so there is no reason not to leave on all the time.

A large majority of the time I leave the camera in auto mode, it does a good job in adjusting itself. Once again the Sharp paled in comparison. I had to continually adjust it to get the best picture out of it.

It has several effects that can be applied even during play back which is nice. There are 4 or 5 different fades available to you. You can even record external sources via the RCAs and S-Video connectors.

Another nice option is that you can buy long lasting batteries. Using the viewfinder only and with the light turned off and an optional battery, Sony claims that you can record for 16hrs!

The only downsides are the B&W viewfinder. Because the LCD screen runs down the battery quicker, I tend to use the viewfinder more. My only other gripe is that many of the feature buttons are hidden behind the LCD panel. So you have to fold out the panel which then deactivates the viewfinder. But if you buy the big batteries ($100 to $150) you can use the LCD screen all the time!

I love this camcorder! Get this camcorder! Be amazed by this camcorder!
