DVD940

The DVD940 comes with a lot of the features that are now standard on most DVD players. The features that aren't as common in this type of DVD player are noted at the bottom (for readability's sake). Overall, I would say that for this DVD player, there were a few features that were a little more difficult such as the on-screen menu. It took a couple tries to navigate efficiently. As well, the remote was fairly complicated. It may seem trivial, however the easier the remote is to manipulate, the easier and more fun it is to watch a DVD.
If you're looking for a simpler DVD player, I would recommend going to a lower numbered model or a different name brand. Most DVDs produce the same picture and sound quality depending on your TV and stereo system, all of which is much greater than the VCR playback quality. I would certainly recommend beginning a DVD collection now instead of buying new VHS tapes. However if you're just starting out, you may want to find an easier model to work with.
Consequently, I ended up getting a different name brand DVD player for a little more money and wound up a much happier person because of it.
Some of the more notable key features of the Philips DVD940:
Feature upgradable is the ability to upgrade features via a special DVD upgrade disc. Backgrounds, search speeds and modes, audio processing, display parameters, interactivity, titles, CD text, languages, screen savers, and video processing may be upgraded.
80 disc parental approval system is a unique parental control system that, when activated, permits play of only pre-authorized discs unless a special user-defined PIN is entered. The player will remember up to 80 disc pre-authorizations, allowing unrestricted playback of these discs.
