Philips DVD711 - good basic model
Oct 13 '00
We have been collecting DVD's all year in a plan to eventually replace our favorite, bulkier VHS tapes. It just became too much to have the DVD's and not be able to watch them, so we finally bought a DVD player.
The primary reason for buying the Philips brand, model #DVD711, was its price. Regular retail at Best Buy was $190.00 and then we had a 10% off coupon which was a motivator. This seemed to be a basic model with nothing fancy, but also without the higher price. Our thinking is that one day they will make one to record as well as play, and we'll want to invest in a system with more bells and whistles then.
This model came with a remote and the cables to hook it up. We noticed that some models costing more did not come with the cables. We assumed then you would have to buy them separately. It was a quick set up; the instructions were easy to understand and we were using the unit within 15 minutes of arriving home.
It has a zoom feature, the capability to resume where we left off should we leave, turn it off, and come back later, and is "feature upgradable" (which we don't know exactly what that means, but it seems like potential). The picture is very good! That may be in part because of the DVD itself, but then this machine does its job well, too.
It also came with a $20 certificate towards ordering DVD's online, free DVD rentals and the "Little Shop of Horrors" movie.
We have been very pleased with its performance, and very glad we chose this model. Its price also means that when advanced technology comes out (probably next year!), we won't mind so much putting this model in the spare room with the 2nd tv and buying a more expensive model with more features.
