| dmxrob's Full Review: RCA DS2122RD Single LNB DIRECTV System |
There are only three things certain in Mid-Missouri: death, taxes and rising cable prices. After our cable access rates for basic (38 channels) skyrocketed to $39.95 a month I decided that enough was enough. Our neighbors for some time had been using a DirecTV system and we finally decided that we would take the plunge.
Down to the local Wal-Mart we drove, and picked up, for $99.95, the satellite equipment. Another $49.95 for the installation kit, I was brave, I'd try installing it myself -- at least once. At this point in time, I figured a $150 investment was well worth it to escape the clutches of the local cable pirates. The people who say that static is a normal part of our cable signal.
Arriving home I opened the kits up and began reading the directions. Looked simple enough. Get a good south view, run the grounding cable, run the signal cable. Since I did not want to attach this to the side of the house, I decided to mount it on a pole I had already set into the ground. The cable was then run into the house and the grounding wire connected inside my garage.
After about 30 minutes of installation of the satellite, it took about another 20 minutes to position it correctly for the signal. This was, by far, the most trickiest part.
To anyone contemplating getting satellite tv, I highly suggest that you at least ATTEMPT to install it yourself before you shell out $100 for installation fees. It is really simple. The hardest part, as I stated, was getting the coordinates set.
Inside we flew, turned on the tv and dialed the 1-800 activation number. Within minutes we were alive with over 100 channels of digital excitement. Even Dolby Digital streamed into the house and filled the air with amazing effects. The price you might ask...... $29.95 a month plus $1.10 for FOX and PBS access.
To recap, we went from $39.95 a month limited cable with a fuzzy reception to ~$30.00 satellite with crystal clear reception. Total time spent, about 1.5 hours.
So, my friends, take your axe, your picks, even your garden trimmers and walk out and proclaim for all to hear that you are tired of the cable rip-off, and slice that cable in half!
