DVD - The real thing!

Jul 12 '00

Boom, Crash, Explosion…Just imagine all of those sounds being brought to real life, just as if you were there, sensation. That is part of the experience you can receive from owning your own DVD player.

DVD – Digital Video Device, is currently the most technologically advanced method we have of watching movies at home. With the improvements to receivers, speakers and all of the functionality now contained within a DVD player, once you try it one time, you will never go back to a VCR and never want to go to the movies again. You’ll have the same feeling at home as you do in a movie theather, you will just have the comfort of home…

DVD’s offer an continuing list of functionality that way supersedes VCR technology. Some of these include:

1. Frame by Frame freeze. You can actually get a crystal clear picture on your TV screen when you hit pause. You also have the ability to move frame by frame with a DVD, unlike other methods. This comes in really handy if your wanting to spend a few extra seconds looking at that Mel Gibson butt-shot or that Sharon Stone “Cross your legs” move.

2. Dozens of sound options are now available on DVD players. The DVD player I just recently purchased has a lot of the functionality of a receiver. You can select Normal Surround sound, Enhanced Surround sound, Cinema sound plus numerous other settings, all from your DVD player.

3. Crystal clear movies are all you will ever get with DVD’s. When playing one, you will see the difference of how much better they are. There is no need for tracking or cleaning your tape, the discs provide a crisp, clean, sharp picture for you to view. The DVD player I just purchased also has a function on it that will allow you to select different viewing formats for your picture. Darker, more theater oriented, lighter and brighter for a more TV picture tube look, etc.

4. NO MORE REWINDING!!!! Don’t you just hate it when you rent a VHS and the previous renter didn’t rewind it??!?! With DVD, you don’t have that problem…You put the disc in and your ready to go. There is no rewinding at all!!!

5. Chapter Selection. With chapter selection, you put your disc in, select menu and you can go to whatever scene you left off at or whatever scene you want played again. This is so much better than having to fast forward or rewind to find a specific spot on a tape.

6. Fully interactive DVD menu’s. These provide you a navigation course around your DVD. Unlike tapes, DVD’s are packed full of behind the scene clips, bloopers, directors comments and a plethora of other bits of information and fun for you. Some even contain games and so forth, i.e. Lost in Space has a trivia game on their DVD.

7. Selection of languages. So you took French in college huh. Well, with DVD’s, you can select the language you want to hear. Some of the possible languages include: French, Spanish, English, Portuguese, Japanese and a few others (depending on the specific DVD). I have often watched a movie a second time with the language on a different selection just to see how it sounds. (How the Grinch Stole Christmas in Japanese is quite humorous!!)

8. With DVD’s, you have the ability to select Normal picture, Wide-screen picture and a few others. These settings allow you to see the movie as the director intended and a lot of times, you see things in wide-screen mode that you don’t see in the normal picture. Wide-screen is my primary choice of viewing.

DVD’s are available everywhere now. All of your normal rental stores should contain both a tape copy and a VHS copy of your movie. You can also purchase DVD’s at any retail store as well. Their costs range up to $30.00 but NEVER more than $30.00 per DVD. A Federal law mandates that one single DVD cannot cost more than $30.00.

For me, there is no reason to doubt the future of DVD’s and it’s technology. I still have a VCR but I haven’t used it in several years. Any tapes of movies that I had purchased I have repurchased under DVD’s now to take advantage of the new sounds, pictures and options available.

I encourage you to make the investment and buy a DVD player. Even a regular plain jane inexpensive one can be picked up at Best Buy for about $119.00 and you can often find them on the Internet for under $100.00. It would make someone a great Christmas present!
