My grandmother signed a 3 year contract with GTE in order to receive a free cell phone at her car dealership. We were cell phone illiterate at the time. She signed for the cheapest plans, thinking she would only use the phone for emergencies while traveling.
The roaming charges that were incurred on her very first trip were astronomical. She didn't want the phone any longer. Being a mother of 6, I told her I would take the phone and make her payments so she didn't get into any trouble for backing out of a contract. I have had this phone and it's service for one year this month.
Last December, my brother sent me a different phone and we signed up with another service and my husband uses that one. His service is so much better. It is like comparing a volkswagon with a cadillac. And I have the volkswagon!!
When I found out GTE sold to Alltel, I hoped things would get better and some better plans would be offered. Well, I can't tell you if there are or not. Why? Because after writing 3 different times requesting plan brochures so that I may upgrade, I still have not received anything. Nothing.
If GTE could back out of its agreement by selling to Alltel, why can I not back out of our agreement.
My advice to any who are considering a purchase, please think carefully about the times you may use your cell phone, how often you may use it, then call around to get rates and plans before making your decision. And if the company will not give to you in writing their plans, skip them. Go on to the next.
My opinion is that Sprint PCS is a much wiser choice and I can't wait until the contract is over for Alltel, so I can switch.
