Face it - cell phones have become ubiquitous. They aren't a symbol of yuppiness anymore so much as they are a measure of convenience. What people without cell phones may not realize is that it is the cell phone service plan that makes all the difference.
In choosing a plan, I knew I wanted to balance a monthly payment with clear sound. In San Francisco, the way NOT to go is Sprint, unless you happen to like sounding as if you are permanently underwater. The Sprint plan may be cheaper per month, but you will definitely pay for this in frustration as your call gets dropped right in the middle of the city driving down Van Ness. GTE and CeullarOne are the other ways to go. The GTE plan offered free minutes and any point to point calls in the US, but the price was something like $90. For that price I'd like a free massage and perhaps a bottle of gin as well.
I went with the CellularOne 600 plan (600 free minutes) which allows me to make calls to any point in the US FROM California. It's digital in the Bay Area mostly, and the sound is generally clear. The range of phones offered is excellent - I happened to like Nokia's line, but you can go read cell phone reviews to make up your own mind. $79.99 is steep though, and I would recommend going for the California 300 at around $50 unless you spend all day on the phone. Make sure you have good credit, or you won't be eligible for these special "California" plans.
The CellularOne plan is binding for a year - there are penalties to breaking this contract; so make sure it's the right plan for you before committing. If you travel a lot, this plan won't make sense for you, as you'll be paying roaming outside of California. If you're mostly in CA though, and want good sound and great coverage at a reasonable price, then I recommend one of CellularOne's California Plans.
