** Overview **
The Napa Mp3 CD player is function packed and easy to use. Unlike the MpTrip, another mp3 cd player, I had my first mp3 cd burnt and running right away. It's basic functions are easy to learn and use and who wouldn't want 160 songs packed onto one cd? Despite how much I love the invention of a portable mp3 cd player, there are shortcomings in this product that buyers should know.
** What's Good **
Being able to pack 160 songs onto one cd is heaven to music lovers. The quality of the sound is good and it is great to be able to skip to any of the 160 songs on the fly. There are a lot of functions on this mp3 player. Not only does it play mp3 cds but it also can play vcds. I don't know how many of us use vcds, but having one more feature on this cd can't be bad.
You can connect this portable mp3 player to almost any audio equipment. I've connected this to my car with a regular cd player cassette adapter. It plays great on the car. I've connected it to my home audio system. I was then able to turn the sound on really and sit back on my couch with the remote in one hand.
** What's Bad **
Remote Control - I was very impressed that the mp3 cd player included a remote control! However, after playing around with the remote control I found that it was very unresponsive. A lot of twisting and waving of the remote is sometimes needed to get a "good angle". In addition to that, the mp3 player does not beep or make a sound when a button push is successfully detected. Therefore, when you enter song 120, you have no idea if the button pushed is received by the mp3 player. Sometimes you end up with song 10 or 12.
Rechargeable Lithium Ion Battery - At first this might seem like a great thing, but then you realize it'll be hard to find a spare one. I still have no idea where you can find a spare one and I can imagine if you do find it it will be quite expensive. Also, my understanding is that lithium ion batteries can develop the memory effect, which means you must drain your battery before you can charge. I wish they had just designed it with regular AA batteries. The price of a pair of Nimh battery is about 5 dollars; cheap considering that it can be charged up to 1000 times with no memory effect.
** Final Verdict **
Even though the length of my rambling on "What's Bad" is longer than "What's good", I still love this mp3 cd player. I can't imagine not having an mp3 cd player and this mp3 cd player does the job pretty well. However, there are many other mp3 cd players out there now and buyers should consider those too. Out of the generic brands, this mp3 cd player is quite expensive at around $150. The MpTrip is around $90 now, and once you spend some time learning the controls, it is a great player. It has less features and does not include a remote, but it much more compact and sleeker looking. It's greatest advantage over the Napa, though, is that it uses regular AA batteries! The price of the Napa mp3 cd player is slowly dropping and I would still recommend it as a good buy despite some of it's flaws.
