Pioneer VSX-604S
Dec 20 '99 (Updated Nov 28 '00)
I have had my Pioneer VSX-604S receiver for about 4 years, and I love it. This receiver has lots of power, Pro Logic, and several other modes of audio output. When I bought this system the suggested price was around 600 or so, but I fortunately bought it for approximately 320. It has 110 Watts per channel in Pro Logic mode(150W in stereo), and it drives my speakers just fine. In fact, when I had cheaper speakers, I often watched movies with friend at my house, and was constantly complemented on my system. Everyone always told me they like watching movies over at my house better than going to the theater spending money. Everyone loves the bass response the system gives me, and with my new speakers on low volume the bass rumbles. I love the power it provides. To give you an idea of the power I was watching Beauty and the Beast with my girlfriend and at the very beginning there is a rumble of thunder. Well this rumble of thunder shook the futon we were on. The system was set relatively low @ 1/4 volume.
I also like the onscreen display. If you want to really impress people just pull that up to adjust your settings while starting a movie. People will just ask what the heck that was and you tell them "Oh that's my new stereo."
Unfortunately, I don't believe this system is sold new anymore. So for about 100-150 you may be able to find a really great sounding system for a starter unit that is used. This unit doesn't have all of the new AC3 or DTS features, but it sounds pretty good to me and has all the inputs and output you could ever want--including pre-out sub and center.
