| ampmom's Full Review: Hughes Networks D1131 Single LNB DIRECTV System |
My husband and I were tired of paying too high cable bills, so we decided to try the Hughes dish system and DirectTV. Several people in our neighborhood had it, so we figured it couldn't be all that bad.
One of the downsides we only thought we'd have is the lack of local channels, but we do have them for an additional fee. It may not be like this everywhere, but there is a law here something about the satellite companies being allowed to offer local. I don't know exactly what it is, but it's new so you'll want to check into it before you buy/ install the dish.
It's actually been great for us. Not only is the monthly fee less than we would be paying for cable, we get more selections. We can also "rent" a movie from the comfort of our living room for less than we would pay at the video rental store. One of our favorite shows from London is available and we weren't even able to get that from our cable company unless perhaps we had the very, very expensive package.
Occasionally, the service goes "out." This is particularly on the stormy nights, but not every time it rains. That can't be judged as a negative, however, because the last cable company we used always seemed to have outages.
My husband easily installed the dish himself. One helpful hint: don't put the compass on a metal surface when installing it yourself! It took him a while to realize he'd done that and therefore, it was messing up finding the right signal. The installation kit tells you exactly where to point the dish to receive service.
Another good feature about having the dish and DirectTV is that we can call anytime and immediately change our service. If we want to add a particular channel by changing to the next package (or vice versa), it's done in minutes.
I can't imagine we'll ever be without the dish from now on.
