| splitsurround's Full Review: B&W DM604 S2 |
Let's start out by saying that by profession, I'm an audio technician, so I listen to movie dialog, music, effects & foley all day long. Every day. And not at quiet levels, I can assure you. So when I knew I was ready to upgrade my home left & right speakers, I knew I had a tough task on my hands.
I went into the listening rooms that all decent audio gear stores have, and listened to a couple different CD's on tons of different speakers. When I heard the 604's, I freaked.
The response is so true, you'll be amazed. I'm constantly hearing new things in songs (a buried instrument, a musician's cough, etc) that I've never heard before. In addition, these speakers really accentuate the midrange, which is what I find is the hardest range to make sound good. And don't get me started on the low end response-I have a M&K THX-150 sub, but sometimes I feel like I don't even need it--seriously. The 604's slam the low end, really giving rock music the edge most speakers can't.
One of the CD's I demo'd was a classical piece, because I hate speakers that can't handle diverse high end frequencies-like a lot of different sweeping strings overlapping each other. THese speakers define everything, and push it out to you.
I have absolutely no complaints about these speakers. They are pricey, but you get what you pay for. And anyone who knows anything about stereo systems will tell you to put your money into the speakers over the reciever or CD player. Another nice feature about these is that you can compliment them, when you're ready, with the center, sub & surround B&W's to fill out a 5.1 home theater set up, and it will sound amazing.
