COMPREHENSIVE, CREDIBLE, CURRENT and INTUITIVE...
Who could ask for anything more of a financial research site and SmartMoney offers it all. It is not only a terrific site for neophytes to get their feet wet in the field of financial funds research, but is also great for us "grey hairs" who've gotten tired of racing form pillar to post between this site and that to find what we want and then...just as importantly...try to figure out just how to find it!
INTUITIVE CHARMS OF SMARTMONEY...
Two pull down menus on the entry page let you quickly find the best/worst funds by category (transportation, high tech, biotech, etc.) or by their year over year performance. This feature alone saves a pile of time, frustration, and searching about. Hit the pull down, hit the menu...and you've go it! GREAT.
Sophisticated search tools permit you to search funds by performance, sector, volatility, and even expenses! (Great for us tight wads who don't want to pay for fund managers' country club memberships!)
A real cool tool is the site's fee analyzer which will knock your socks off by showing you how expense ratios can eat your alive! (Been there, done that. No more, though, thanks to the analyzer - now I check 'em first and run the numbers.
BUILD THAT FUND...AND SCORE!
There's a dingus called a "Fund Builder" on SM that's is a nifty gadget, too! It lets you graph changes in historical fund returns and volatility as you mix and match certain funds over time. I use this to get a visual snapshot of how my 401k might look given certain scenarios I think make sense. Be sure to check it out...but you'll need to make sure you have Java turned on. (See your options menu.)
SCOPE
Using Lipper data...SM gives you access to comprehensive and current data 6,000+ funds! And, if 6000 aren't enough funds for you to sift through...well, you must have more time than sense...lol!
