| tag_1234's Full Review: Hollywood Stock Exchange |
Yes, I finally found yet another way to waste my time online. The Hollywood Stock Exchange or HSX is a rather unique and refreshing idea that both copies and mocks the standard day-trading experience.
So what the heck do you do here?
After signing up you start with 2 Million H dollars in both a music and movie category which work as different exchanges. From there you buy and sell shares of your favorite movie stars, films, albums, musical artists and even delve into some options. The purpose of these little investitures is to outdo everyone else and get placed on one of the little leaderboards or just to quietly amass a little fortune.
The extras / good
OK, to be quite honest I tried this thing on a whim. I really think I would have enjoyed an actual stock exchange more. The thing that has made me come back fairly often was the new movie news. I can find out release times and learn about upcoming flicks with a minimal amount of scrounging and searching.
They recently decided to introduce a way to make some actual money based on the performance of certain select films. Hey! Pretend money for real money?!? It sound like a good deal to me despite the rather low payout.
The site is run like a professional exchange for the most part. Trades are executed within 15 minutes and they even have a streamer to keep track of what "the market" is doing.
The portfolio section is very well done and shows you almost everything you need to know about your overall performance as well as individual stocks.
The limitations
This place is run almost like a normal stock exchange with concerns about insider trading and various other nasty things which could easily make the site unfair and unenjoyable. Perhaps these limitations are a bit strict at times. Individual options are limited to 10,000 shares and stocks are generally limited to 50,000 shares. All this just when I wanted to corner the market! This really means that you need to diversify.. that means more time spent, and minor returns.
You've already got my $0.02!!
With a site that strived so heavily to maintain fairness and prevent the meaner aspects of the market from happening I would have expected better. The site looks pretty professional and has banners resembling the ones here at our beloved site. The problem is that they offer a chance of H dollars if you click on a banner advertisement. This keeps their banner click rate high but really shows you why they made the site: the green stuff. H dollars are also given for referrals.
Capt'n the Corniness sensor just went through the roof!
I now use this mostly for movie info and do some very quick trading. It is indeed a strange concept and a piggyback on almost all other similar exchanges. It might seem a bit different but can be entertaining and requires only a few minutes once you make some initial picks. If you've got some spare time and feel you now the general feelings and trends of American public then give this site a try. There might even be some real cash in it for you.
There was no "Have not interacted with customer service" on the menu. I have not dealt with them.
