In the past few days I have realized that maybe I spend a little too much time here at Epinions. I think I am borderline obsessive. Anyhow, I decided I needed a little change of pace so I blew the dust off my Scrabble CD-ROM and popped that bad boy in for a few games. In all honesty I can't remember another game that has ever made me that bored.
Having no one to play against, I challenged the computer player "Maven" to a game. I set her up for the novice level and let the game commence. Maven and I were having a grand old time until I realized that I was about sixty points behind. I began paying closer attention to her words when I noticed that I had never even heard most of them before. Needless to say, I lost that game with flying colors.
Perhaps I'm missing something, I thought. I decided to check out the tutorial type section of the game called mini games. Here there are challenges such as two-letter words, three letter words, suffixes, anagrams and many others. The most helpful thing I found in this area was Professor Maven. This option reviews all of your previous games, analyzes you major problems and suggests different mini games that may correct the problem.
After being told that I needed work on two-letter words and anagrams, I tried my best to fix the problems and played another game. This time losing again, but not as miserable as before.
One of the major problems with Scrabble is the hints option. Instead of passing when I could not find a word, I would ask for a hint. You aren't penalized for the help and it is basically cheating. What's worse was that I was still losing.
There is also a network play option. If you are connected to the internet and select this option you can play other "real" people over the MSN Zone, therefore giving yourself half a chance to win.
I personally found this game to be rather boring and monotonous. The board game version isn't that exciting either but at least you have real flesh and blood people to talk to and can not cheat that easily. Although the mechanics of this game were good, I strongly believe that the creators could have done something to spice it up a little.
