| timtimes's Full Review: Scrabble for Windows |
I've delayed purchasing this game for at least a year. I always seem to forget when I'm in the computer store, because I get distracted by so much other stuff. It has been about ten years since I last played Scrabble, and my recollections were that it was difficult to find a player to match up with. Unless you have access to a reasonably matched playing partner, it can be really tedious to play. The prospect of being able to play anytime against other players who at least had enough love of the game to pony up the $30 purchase price lured me back in.
I've got version 2.0. Install went smoothly. I played four games against the computer (set to intermediate), winning three of the four. Content that I had the basic operation of gameplay down, I set my sights on the MSN gaming zone to get into the online arena. There are several steps involved and multiple downloads necessary before you can begin playing. First, there's a patch from Hasbro to fix on-line functionality issues. MSN will prompt you to the patch before letting you play. Once you install the patch (1.4 meg if memory serves me), you sign up for an MSN gaming account (free-will wonders never cease?). You will then be forced to download and install MSN gaming software (another meg or so). All these downloads were making me nervous, but I encountered no problems.
After all the software was ready, I went to the Scrabble area and got in a one-on-one with someone far superior to me (little rusty after 10+ years of nonplay). There is a chat window that lets you correspond with your playing partner(s). Neat little perk. I played another game one-on-one, then a three player, before calling it a night. All aspects of the game that I have used functioned perfectly.
I read a review here about how 'boring' it is. Hey, you either like Scrabble or you don't. The computer version is an exact replica of the board game. Enjoy.
