| mz303's Full Review: Sony 8MB Memory Card PS2 |
Just like the original Playstation; when you're in the market for a memory card, the rule of thumb is to go only with Sony brand cards. You put many days of work into getting your game saves the very best they can be. What you store them on should be of equal quality to the work you put into your games. Don't trust unlicensed third party cards that have often been reverse-engineered in order to get them to work. Most, if not all of them fail at some unexpected time. You can't go wrong with Sony.
Sony has updated their original memory cards quite a bit for the Playstation 2. Now instead of having 15 "blocks" in which to store game data, the memory card is treated more like a computer disk, holding 8000k. 8MB is much more than the 128k cards that have been the standard until now, and this additional space can be used for more complex saves. The new system of using actual kilobytes instead of memory blocks will make storage more efficient. Rather than wasting an entire block on a simple save file (such as high scores), that data is now saved as the size it actually is. Games like Gran Turismo 3 will most likely use a larger portion of your PS2 memory card.
Aside from that, Sony claims improved speed of the memory card. I have noticed a slight increase in speed compared to what I was used to on the original Playstation, but nothing drastic.
I've seen these cards on sale for $30, which is a fair price for what you're getting. One warning to any potential buyers: you cannot save original Playstation games on a PS2 memory card directly from a game (you can copy them onto it for storage, but the games will not recognize the card).
