| tlf's Full Review: Sim Farm For Windows, Mac |
Although my favorite games are in the RTS genre and the FPS genre, all sim games by Maxis pull me in. This game is no different. It is a cross between Simcity original and a farm, with no rotating but it's still very addictive.
The game offers many things you would expect to see in a farm game- (what were you expecting?) the options to buy and sell futures, buy different crops, fly that plane with the chemicals and spray towns- and yes, like all Maxis games, deal with disasters like droughts, tornadoes, and insects.
You will feel right at home in this game if you have ever played a Maxis game before, your palette is right where you would expect it and it has a lot of customization. You control everything down to buying and selling land. The game eventually turns into a race between you and the town that thrives off of you- you grapple for land and try to save some extra money so you can buy a plot of land before the town buys it away. I suggest that when the town offers for your opinion on what type of zone to put on recently purchased land, say airport every time. You will enjoy yourself later when you have more money.
SimFarm also has small things worth mentioning- the highlight of this epinion- the plane, the cropduster. It is really fun to load it up with chemicals and go over to the town and spray the cars. Nothing happens, but you feel like you're doing something. Another fun thing is the crash the plane into the town, as it stays there for a long time if you don't do anything about it. You can also use the plane for cropdusting if you want, but you can do that in other ways too.
The game is pretty shallow- there are a few fail-safe ways of making a good farm. The easiest I have found is to go to a southern climate with a lot of water and grow oranges, and you usually get quite a bit of money for that. This works with most of the fruits but oranges yield the most dough.
I suggest this game highly, if not for anything else than the plane. The game is kind of humorous, sometimes, querying a rock will say, "ancient petrified llama droppings."
