| wilyliam's Full Review: Heavy Metal F.A.K.K.2 For Windows |
When I was wandering the halls of CompUSA a couple days ago and saw Heavy Metal F.A.K.K.2 on the shelf (thanks for the non-existent announcement Ritual!) buying it was not a choice. It was mandatory. I've been a fan of Heavy Metal the Movie since I was old enough to watch it - and after I saw the trailer for the new movie and the game, I have been waiting breathlessly for it's release.
I have not been disappointed.
The graphics are fantastic, QuakeIII style, as advertised, and since the game is a little more complex, there is quite a bit more to look at. So far, I've only seen a few monsters, but they're amazingly rendered - and definitely Heavy Metal style! Should you buy this game, be sure to take your time, because eye-candy abounds (and I'm not just talking about the main character!).
The sounds are great - there are some tracks from the new movie in the intro screen, but then the music so far throughout the game is ambient and thematic, not overbearing. Of course, it can be turned off if it still bothers you.
The story is definitely Heavy Metal style - one fun surprise after another and, surprisingly, it makes sense - even if you're not familiar with the F.A.K.K.2 story line going in. You can talk to most of the characters - and some of them are really interesting.
The controls are easy - the defaults are the same as QuakeIII - in fact, some of the default controls were the same as my QIII controls after I tweaked them - as if Ritual read my mind. Weapons are easy to master, even though they are more complex than the QuakeIII point-and-shoot basics - which adds immensely to the game (swordfighting is cool . . .).
One of the major cons - which has been resounding over the internet - is that there is no multiplayer, though honestly, the single player is so much fun that I think it'll keep me occupied until someone makes a patch. Also, there have been some problems with stability for some people, though I personally haven't had much trouble. Some people using Voodoo2 cards have had all kinds of problems. This is partially addressed on Ritual's web site - and a patch is coming soon that is supposed to address those problems.
In summary, I bought this game out of principle (which is not a normal thing for me to do) - and I'm glad I did. It's enjoyable, does justice to a story I really enjoy, and it's as technically advanced as anything out there right now. I definitely recommend this game.
Oh, and if you're wondering about all the references to QuakeIII - put that in your search engine, download the demo and give it a whirl . . . find out what all the fuss is about!!
