| sisterpink's Full Review: Shadow Gate for Nintendo 64 |
"Oy vey" about sums up this game. The backgrounds are great, but the characters are extremely ugly. The puzzles can be fun or exciting, but they're usually either too easy or far too long and drawn out. There is NO replay value, but you should be sure to rent it. I'm always glad for the remake of a "classic" game, but I can't help but think that this one mayhaps should've been kept on the NES.
Shadowgate 64 can be fun, and will drawn you in quite quickly. It has some gorgeous backgrounds and the lighting is excellent. There are some places that look incredibly realistic, like inside the church when you raise your head to see the stained glass windows, but the character design and animation is flat and "chunky", repetitive, slow, and choppy. This detracts from what might be a graphically amazing game, making it look surprisingly shoddy -- even for an N64 title!
I like some of the gameplay very much, some of the puzzles are engrossing and complicated. However, to be perfectly honest it has ZERO replay value and can be beaten in two to three hours. Do you really want to pay $60 for a game that can be beaten so quickly? I don't. Be sure to rent it before you buy, IF you buy.
Most of the puzzles are either far to easy or far too hard, there is no happy medium. Too many items are useless, and too many have uses you would never think of. There is also an incredibly annoying character who pops up time and time again, your "teacher", who is one of the most poorly designed characters I've ever seen. Plus, his dialogue gives away so much that it makes for no surprises later in the game, or else is obnoxiously unhelpful.
The music is good in some scenes, but is repetitive and often exactly the opposite of what should go with the action in the certain scene. The sound affects are far more annoying than helpful, and the game actually might have been better without them.
It's terribly hard to find your way around the town and the later levels. Needless to say, this can be extremely frustrating. Aside from the fact that it's so easy to get lost, there aren't many obstacles to get in the way of you reaching your goal, making for a lousy "challenge".
All in all, this title is "okay, not great". I'd recommend it to you providing you only rent it, but get ready to have one seriously short adventure. Yeesh. *-*
