| LiquidSnake's Full Review: Atari 7800 |
I have played many, many game systems out there-from the Oddesy II to the Intellivision to the Collecovision to all five Atari consoles (2600,5200,7800, Jaguar & Jaguar CD, Lynx) not to mention the Nintendo and Sega machines, and I own a Playstation. My personal favorite Atari console is the 5200, since it had an almost arcade-perfect version of Moon Patrol, Dig-Dug, Popeye, Wizard of Wor, and PAC-MAN (the 2600 version is poo-the same damn maze OVER and OVER, no fruit, nearly monochrome... UGGGHH!!!!).
My family got us children one of these things for Christmas one year (like the one it was released) and I played it for awhile. I was most unimpressed with the selection of titles for it, the fact that it COULD play 2600 games but NOT 5200 ones (stupid Atari NEVER learns...). I had also been "spoiled" by the NES that nearly all of my friends had, while we were one of the schmucks who got stuck with this waste of space. I am all for nostalgia, but I prefer it to be ARCADE-PERFECT or at least as close to it as the current technology allows. The 5200 did this perfectly (except the joysticks were TOO arcade-perfect: I.E. they broke after about a month or so of play!!) The 7800 was a noble effort, but did not achieve anywhere NEAR the NES or the Master System which came out in 1987 for one reason: the games were not too great, and the 2600 library was not much better (but it gave the 7800 something that the 5200 was sorely lacking-an extensive software library)
Before I played this console, I had been an Atari fan for life. They could do little wrong in my little world of gamer bliss (except for be CHIEFLY RESPONSIBLE for the '84 crash by licensing a million CRAPPY GAMES for the 2600, but I digress...) I was a bit excited by the art on the box, and would often stare wistfully for the games that never seemed to arrive in stores. I mean, nearly every gaming system box advertises games that never get produced, but I could BARELY find ANY for the 7800. The ones that we DID end up with were sadly not very much fun. Perhaps I am just being a bitter kid who got chocolate when he wanted strawberry, but I do not think so. I remember pretty well how much I played the 7800, and compared to the Master System, the NES, the Genesis, the SNES and (especially) the Playstation, the hours of enjoyment with the Atari 7800 were FAR more limited.
I WANTED to like the 7800, since it was our home system until I got lucky enough to win a Kellog's second chance drawing and got my grubby little paws on a Sega MASTER SYSTEM (see my next review...) and we sold the 7800 when the fam was hard-pressed for cash (like the 3 or 4 2600's we used to have, AND the 5200...)
