Yes, it's true, I am a girlie girl. I love my flowered bedspread, my floating candles, my endless array of picture frames. So, when my boyfriend got his Playstation 2, I was skeptical, to say the least.
We set up the PS2 immediately after the UPS guy left, and started with Madden 2001. Well, I don't play football. I have no idea what all the plays mean, so playing this game with me is a major waste of time. So we moved on to SSX. We weren't sure what to expect from this game, so we just cracked open the manual and learned the basics.
As a girlie girl, I can only come to one conclusion about SSX:
This game rocks!
It is exciting, fast-paced, and fun! You truly feel as though you are out there on the slopes, trying to beat out the competition. Let me tell you a bit more about the game.
The basics
You can choose from eight different characters to play. Four are available immediately, and the other four are "unlocked" as you get better at the game. The first four characters to choose from include two guys and two girls. Yay! The girlie girl can choose a buxom blonde to be her alter ego. You can even change outfits! (Was that option put in just for women? I can't see why men would care- though my boyfriend and his roommate were deliberating which one made the buxom blonde's, um, assets look bigger.)
Each character has his or her strengths and weaknesses. As you progress through the game, you can unlock different snowboards that go faster, or turn with more stability. I haven't had the privilege of being that good yet.
There are two choices for play: Single Event or World Circuit.
In the Single Event you can choose from warm-up, race, show off, or freestyle. In the warm-up, you simply practice your jumps. The race pits you against 5 other racers. In the show off, you try to earn a medal by performing as many tricks as possible within the allotted time. In freestyle, there is no time limit, so you can jump and flip to your heart's content. To start, you can choose from two courses in this format. As you improve, you can unlock more courses.
In the Single Event format, you can choose to play any of the above in 2 player format, with a split screen. So far, one of the happiest moments of my life was beating my boyfriend in a race AND in the show-off event in the same morning!
In the World Circuit, you compete for increased status. To pass each board, you have to finish in the top 3 in first the quarter finals, then the semis, and then the finals. Once you have finished in the top 3 in the finals of one board, you move onto the next. By doing so, you move up the ranks from "Newbie" to "Master". (I'm still a newbie, by the way!)
In all forms of the game, whenever you perform a new trick, you "unlock" it in your trick book. It is important to have a memory card so that you can save your profile and do not lose the new tricks and status that you have earned.
A girlie girl goes snowboarding
The effects on this game are amazing. From the music to the commentary, every detail is perfect. Unfortunately, I often hear the announcers say things like "Player 2, you're in last place. Makin a move to the back of the bus!" Ouch!
If you have a PS2, or know someone who does, I would highly recommend this one. It has everything to keep both the girlie girl and the action-seeking guy happy. And unlike football or hockey, you don't have to know how the sport works to make the game work.
Enjoy! And kiss your life goodbye!
