| bwestman's Full Review: Crash Team Racing for PlayStation 1 |
Now, I am 37 years old and as you might imagine, Playstation games are NOT my life (Epinions, well that's another story). However, one rainy afternoon, I agreed to play this game with my son. I didn't want to play in the first place, so I reluctantly agreed to play for 30 minutes. At the end of an hour, I told him that I'd do one more race, and then I was going to have to quit. Of course, that was about the third time I'd said that, too.
This game is so addictive! The graphics, while far from high-tech, are really cute and colorful. The action is smooth and the sounds are funny. As you might imagine, from the title, this is a racing game. Sort of. You seen you choose from one of eight characters from the popular Crash Bandicoot series. If you have never played any of the previous Crash games, though, it won't affect your enjoyment of this one. Each character supposedly has strengths and weaknesses, but I didn't know the difference and chose based on the merits of cuteness alone. I won about half the time so I don't see where it really matters which one you pick.
There are quite a few tracks to choose from (I don't remember how many) and each one has it's own unique hazards. The characters race in little go-cart looking contraptions and pick up weapons along the way to use against fellow racers. You can only have one at a time and you never know what you are going to get since they are concealed in little brown boxes which you run over along the way.
My son and I played in two-player mode (obviously) and the screen was split with player one on the top of the screen and player two on the bottom. This configuration worked well for us and the game play was great. When in two-player mode, the only other racer is the other player. When playing alone, you have to race all seven of the other characters and they game play is really more difficult. The only goal in two-player mode is to beat your opponent. In single player mode, your goal is to win "cups" to achieve higher levels and open up new tracks. In adventure mode you have to complete tracks in a certain order to move on to the next level of tracks.
Either way, the game is a lot of fun for children and adults. Skill is a major factor in this game, but it is not difficult for younger players to quickly develop the skill to rival and even overcome older players.
I would highly recommend this game to anyone. There is nothing offensive that would prohibit younger players from enjoying the game with their parents and the learning curve is relatively low. In no time at all, everyone can be off to the races!
