Cash, the gift of gifts?
Nov 16 '00
Before you even consider buying a gift, make sure you know your teenager. Teenagers are hard to please these days. Some reasons are due to technology, our economic prosperity, and the simple fact they they're teenagers.
If something's "hip," chances are your teenager will enjoy it. However, it is impossible to keep up with what "is" and what "is not." Something that is "hot" today might be "not" tomorrow.
I know what my teen wants!
If you're going to buy a specific gift, make sure you know EXACTLY what he or she wants. Even then, pray. Don't delay, as what your teenager wants changes from day to day. Cash is always accepted, because it can purchase what your ten really wants.
What about CDs?
CDs are good, but teenagers change. Do you have a specific name and title to buy? If you bought a CD at random, or even from the same artist your teen loves, it still might simply be taken back to the store. Cash, as a gift, eliminates the problem, as the teen will buy his/her own CD.
What about a gift certificate?
Gift certificates can be useful to them, if you know exactly where they shop. What happens if your teen changes? Cash is accepted everywhere (just about).
What about clothes?
Do you know how many different types of clothes out there? It's a jungle, trying to figure out what your teen wants. Cash allows your teen to buy exactly what he/she wants, in the size he/she wants.
What about games?
Well, some teenagers don't like games. Parents have a much harder time, figuring out which games are the best at a given time. Teenagers seem to know what to get, before they walk in the store. Without a specific title AND for a specific system, it's risky. In fact, the newer video games run on CDs, meaning a CD is no longer just a CD.
Why cash?
*Cash is still the most widely used, and safest currency. Credit card numbers can be stolen, or your teen can get on a "spending spree." Cash sets a predefined limit on spending.
*Better yet, it allows for peace in the house. The parents don't have to shop through a long line. And, they have peace of mind, knowing their teen is getting something he/she likes. The teen gets what he/she wants. The store manager doesn't have to worry, about someone returning something.
*If what the teenager wants is too expensive to get right now, cash is a way to let your teen save money for a while, and eventually get what he/she wants. In other words, it teaches your teenager to save money, something beneficial in his/her future.
Every teen has his/her own interests, and it is hard to recommend something specific to a general class of people. However, money is as general as it gets, and it makes people happy.
