Body Slam Your Spouse A few Times.
Dec 07 '00
The thing that most want to look for in a mattress is durability along with comfort. If the mattress is comfortable but doesn't last, it's just as worthless as a durable one that you can't fall asleep on.
The first thing to remember is that you get what you pay for. If you go to an irreputable bargain mattress store, odds are you're going to wind up with a pile of junk mattress that has springs poking you in the back within 2 years. Don't get me wrong, these stores do carry the top of the line brands but they will use some cheap crappy one to lure customers in, and then you will probably pay top dollar anyway. Go to a reputable store that has a good reputation for quality products.
Before picking out a mattress, decide on what you are looking for before you get to the store. Get all the facts and figures by doing some research. There are a lot of mattress companies that now have web sites with information on their products. Make sure you know what you want because when they say "knowledge is power" they weren't joking. Sales people look for people that don't know what they want and who have no clue as to what to look for and then they unload the crappiest products on them. Knowing about products is the best way to get a good deal.
Don't be afraid to walk away. That is the biggest mistake anyone can make when shopping for any large tag item. Remember that the mattress you buy is an investment in a good nights sleep. You want to get the best product for the best price. You wouldn't buy a car without shopping around for a good price, the same should be with a mattress or any other item that costs more than $200.00.
Test ride. No, you can't sleep in the store or have sex with your lover or body slam your spouse either. Not only will the sales people look at you funny, but odds are you'll be kicked out of the store. To test out a new mattress, lie on the thing. Try to look around without a sales rep breathing down your neck at every turn. Roll around on the thing and see if the mattress supports your back. Make sure the size you choose is large enough to accomodate you and your spouse. Some couples need a lot of space because one may like to stretch out and kick the other out of bed. That's something else to consider.
Off brands vs. name brands. With a good name brand, you will find that they cost a bit more than an off brand but in the long run it's sometimes best to just stick with a brand you know. There are so many brands out there that are high priced junk. Make sure the company has a good reputation and that it has been around long enough that it won't be going under soon. Why? Because if by some chance you get a defective mattress, you will want them to warrantee the product. If the company goes under, you're screwed! Pick a good name, then shop around for the best price.
