Engwall is on target - but I say don't trash that electric razor just yet...

Jan 26 '00

Around 10 years ago I went to a dermatologist because my face kept breaking out in a rash and getting all itchy. He looked at my face and said "You shave up, don't you?". My response was, "Well, yes I do" and his recommendation was "Don't". That was the entire visit and it cost me $45.

In retrospect, what he recommended makes complete sense. I have a very coarse beard and within two days it is pretty well grown in. Thus, a regular razor can be painful to use, especially around the chin and above the upper lip. The reason I suggest that you keep the electric razor is simple... if you have a coarse beard and it fills in quickly, I would suggest the following method of shaving as it minimizes the irritation to your face: first shave with an electric razor and then follow up with the regular razor. If you are like me, you might have to use the electric razor one more time. Granted, this method of shaving takes a little longer than just using the regular razor, but your face won't feel like you just rubbed sandpaper all over your skin.

I agree that the Braun electric razor is not a very good brand name to use. Instead, I recommend a Remington two-foil electric razor. You will have a little less fine-detail control, but the shave is much more comfortable. Additionally, I agree whole-heartedly with Engwall's recommendation of the Mach 3. Unfortunately, the Mach 3 is somewhat expensive and the replacement blades are costly. But if you loath to shave as much as I do, then I recommend the Mach 3, as well.
