KELLOG'S NUTRI-GRAIN CEREAL BARS
Our Daily Breakfast Ritual:
This morning my two kids and I (2 and 3) were going through our everyday breakfast ritual. It usually starts on with me saying "Ok, what do you guys want for breakfast?" My daughter will usually opt for some type of cereal most mornings. But, my son will usually start chanting "Cereal Bars, Cereal Bars."
This is his favorite breakfast food (along with a banana) and also his favorite snack food. In fact I think the kid would eat cereal bars every minute of everyday if I would let him. But, that's ok there are a lot of worse things he could eat.
PRODUCT INFO:
Kellog's Nutri-Grain Cereal Bars come in 7 different flavors: Strawberry, Apple Cinnamon, Blue Berry, Rasberry, Mixed Berry, Cherry and Peach.
The regular size package comes with 8 bars. Which I would guess to be about 5 to 6 inches long and about 1 ½ by 2 inches wide. They are sort of like a pastry shell with a fruit filling inside. Except the pastry shell has more like a cereal than a pastry. It is made with such ingredients as: wheat, and whole grain oats.
They are sweet but not real sweet. Kind of like a cookie, but, they seem to have a more wholesome taste. The manufacturer claims that there are no preservatives, and that they are low in sodium. They are also relatively low in fat (3 grams each) and calories (140 each). They are also said to be a good source of calcium 20% of RDA. So they may act as a good calcium serving for someone who doesn't like or can't have dairy products.
PROS:
My kids love them. They come individually wrapped so they are easy to just stick in my purse for those time that I know we are going to be out for a while and the kids might need a snack.
As I stated above the are relatively healthy and low in fat and calories. They also provide my children with a calcium boost. When I give these to my kids I don't feel like I am providing them with an empty snack.
CONS:
I don't think you get very many in a box, considering what you pay (Usually $2.00 per box or more). My kids eat a lot of these so we buy a lot of boxes. It would be easier and probably cheaper if they offered a larger size (which they very well may, but, I have not seen it).
The bars size is a little to small. My son is two years old and he can easily eat three of them in one sitting. Back when I used to work I used to grab a couple of cereal bars on my way to work to eat in the car. I would eat two and still be hungry. You figure at this point I have already ingested 280 calories and 6 grams of fat. My point being that although they are low in fat and calories you need to eat a lot of them to feel satisfied, that way you could end up doubling or tripling your fat and calorie intake. I think it would be great if they would offer a jumbo size cereal bar.
The size problem is not unique to the Kellog's brand. All of the other cereal bar brands are just as small.
Also, I noticed when I looked at the ingredients list that the first ingredient in the fruit filling is (high fructose corn syrup).
Summary:
All of the cons aside I will continue to by Kellog's Nutri-Grain cereal bars. Mainly because if I didn't my son would probably go through with drawls. And like I said before there are many worse things they can eat.
