Same quality at a lower price

Jul 10 '00 (Updated Jul 21 '00)

When it comes to buying hard core knives for your kitchen usually two major brands come to mind- Wusthof Trident & Henckels. It is no doubt that both brands have a solid reputation of being the best, but the price of such tools can amount to a towering purchase.

For the price of one chef knife (retail price about $89.00) whether Henckels or Wusthof, you can purchase an eight-piece cutlery set, including sharpening steel and wooden storage block for the same price! This hidden jewel of the kitchen is the Cook's Club Choice. (Please be weary that this is the latest line that is out there. The first set that was introduced to the public does not possess the same qualities of what your about to read).

Besides the block and steel, also included for everyday wear & tear is an 8.5" inch chef knife, 8.5" inch slicer, 6.25" inch boning knife, 8.5" inch serrated bread knife, 5.25" inch utility, and 3.75" inch paring knife. So far I have only come across this cutlery set at Lechter's. (Lechter's is a chain of kitchen supply stores found mostly in west coast shopping malls.)

This cutlery set is made of forged steel and comes with a full tang. All the knives in this set come with a heavy bolster for added balance and will steer your hand away from the blade just in case you slip. The set is well balanced and the handles are big enough for a comfortable yet snug grip and wide enough for folks with small hands.

The knives are made in China and all blades follow similar, specifications to the Wusthof and Henckels design. The only notable difference is that the Wusthof & Henckels knives are slightly thicker by about .1 cm. Open the box for a closer look and you will see that each one of these knives is a complete piece of steel.

From the tip of the blade to the end of the handle, every blade possesses three rivets for added durability, thus, giving each knife a strong slicing stroke. By purchasing this set you will definitely avoid paying extra for a brand name and at the same time, posses a set of knives that can be counted among the world's best.

As, an added suggestion; turn your knives blade side up. This dual technique will not only help keep your knives sharp, it would also keep the cutlery from biting into your storage block as well. And as with all sharp edges, always cut away from you and keep them out a child's playful hands.
