| Bonies7's Full Review: LASIK Eye Surgery |
The Brotherhood of the Blinking Light Brigade added another member today....me. Yes....less than 12 hours ago I had laser surgery done on both of my eyes to correct a nearsightedness problem that I've had for over 30 years....and I am going to give you some direct advice right up front - this LASIK surgery procedure is the BEST thing that you'll ever spend money on in your life!
Pretty bold statement...huh? Well, here's why you'll need to throw out all those concerns that you've had. Its not painful at all...the actual surgery time when the laser is reshaping your cornea takes 18 seconds or less per eye. You're ask to focus on a blinking light after being given a couple eyedrops that deaden the surface of your eye...and you feel absolutely nothing. I actually was seeing 20-40 five minutes after surgery...when I went in before the surgery I was at 20-450. 18 seconds to create lifetime near perfect vision...unbelievable.
I know...I know - you're worried that if something goes wrong you might be blinded. Well, that's always been my main concern....but it was based on hearsay and my lack of knowledge on this breakthrough procedure. The eye surgeon I used (Robbins Eye Center in Bridgeport, CT) had me sit through a serious of videos that walked me through what was going to be done....what were some of the potential complications...and what to expect when the surgery occurred. And by the time I had completed the videos and literature, I became convinced that my fears were groundless. I personally think it's more likely that you'll be blinded by a meteor striking you as you walk down the street than by LASIK surgery.
The cost might seem high to you....$2000 per eye or $4000 for the complete deal. But considering the fact that I was shelling out a couple of hundred bucks every two to three years for new glasses...plus hundreds more for contacts and solutions...and $4000 for the rest of my life seems like a damn good price/value ratio.
Why did I do this surgery? Vanity...for sure. I never had my glasses on when I took a photo since I didn't think I looked as good with glasses...and I always wore my contacts whenever I was speaking in front of a group. But the real kicker was the ability NEVER to have to worry about glasses slipping down on my nose when I'm sweating....NEVER having to look through lenses that were perpetually dirty....and ALWAYS being able to see when I was awake...instead of stumbling over to the nightstand to find my glasses.
Recovery time was obviously very quick....since I'm writing this the same day. I took a sleeping pill after the surgery and was out for about five hours or so. When I awoke, the first thing I noticed was the clock on my bedstand....I could read the numbers easily. I am sure that was one of those moments we all have in life when we realize what we've been missing and thank our lucky stars for technology!
If I was in the business of selling lenses or contacts....watch out Lenscrafters and Accuvision....I'd be investing every cent I made in laser equipment and getting out of the lens business. Why? Because this technology is going to eliminate the need for glasses for 95% of the population.
If you've been considering it, I would highly advocate a trip to a couple of eye surgeons in your area. Look for someone who has done hundreds of eyes and guarantees their work...and if you're in a large metro area you can probably find "specials" that bring the price down even further.
But don't wait....you can be seeing better....with NO GLASSES....for the rest of your life.
