They Both Cover The BUTT, But....

Oct 01 '00

When I had a child there wasn't a choice. It was cloth and only cloth diapers. Disposable diapers came into being long after my child's need for them was past. I have heard much of the debate and I think I understand the different viewpoints. Let's see if I get the facts right.

1. Cloth diapers can be used over and over again. My son used a diaper service and used cloth diapers regularly on his children. When they had rashes the service could let you know if there was something in the diaper or water that was bothering the kids. They were picked up and delivered every week for a reasonable cost.

2. Disposable diapers are great for travel. This too is a very attractive argument for disposables and I agree. While on vacation, no one wants to throw out your cloth diapers, or wash cloth diapers, or save cloth diapers until you get home. Yuck! You're on vacation and you don't want to be bothered, me neither.

3. Cloth Diapers can become car wash cloths or window cleaner rags when junior is all finished with them. This assumes that you have your own cloth diapers that you've been washing and that you're not using a diaper service.

4. Disposable diapers are filling up land fills and will take decades to decompose. I think this is the most compelling argument for not using disposables. No matter how convenient they may be if they are hurting the environment we should stop using them. We got by forever before disposables were invented and we can get by without them in the future. It may be a little inconvenient but I could sacrifice a little time to help our environment and help the planet.

5. Cloth diapers smell bad when they're left in the diaper pail. (Disposables don't require a diaper pail). Get used to it. No one said having children was easy or smelled great. You can put a deodorant block in the pail and the smell will be gone.

I could probably go on and on but I won't. I hope I've made my case for cloth diapers vs. disposables. Maybe someone should invent a disposable that was biodegradable but I guess that wouldn't work because they would fall off the baby as soon and he/she had a movement. We seem to overlook what harm we are doing to our environment while we are trying to take the more simple way of doing things. In today's society we're all trying to do so much in so little time that we're always ready to embrace something that seems simpler. Maybe we should take a couple of minutes to weigh the effects of what we do before we do it.
