A Very Personal Choice

I used disposable diapers exclusively with my first three children - mainly because I was also a working parent and was not willing to spend my time at home washing diapers. I wanted to be spending that time with my children instead.
When my fourth child was born, we decided to use cloth diapers. Both my husband and I were concerned about the environment, and thought it was the best way to go. I checked into a local diaper service, and found that it would not be too terribly expensive.
I quickly found that I hated cloth diapers. My baby would wake up instantly when she wet at night, resulting in broken sleep for both of us. The waterproofers rarely worked the way they were supposed to, and my daughter was mostly miserable.
One day I read an article about diapers. The bottom line of this article was that in areas where landfill space is a problem, better to use cloth diapers. If landfill space was not a problem - neither were disposables. Our city had recently installed an incinerator - and we decided to switch to disposables.
My daughter was a lot happier - less leaking and much more comfortable in the disposables. It ended up costing the same amount as the diaper service did, so the expense was not a problem either.
Some people will always swear by cloth diapers - and some will only use disposables. I think it is a personal choice - choose the type that will work best for your baby and you - and the environment, depending on the situation in your city.
