Epinions.com Special 2003 Bonus Eroyalties

At our "Pseudo-Chat" on Tuesday, December 16th, Nirav announced that top-contributing Epinions' members would receive a special 2003 bonus of Eroyalties. Nirav had this to say during the chat: It's not often that one merges with another company, relaunches the merged company with a new name, consolidates three locations into one, does a TV campaign, and everything else we've done in 2003. And you've stuck with us the entire time. We wanted to thank most the members who joined Epinions before the merger and continued to contribute this year. For those of you interested in how we chose the recipients, here are the criteria: - Anyone who has been a Category Lead in 2003 will receive a $100 special bonus.
- Anyone who has been a Top Reviewer or Advisor in 2003 will receive a $50 special bonus.
- If you've written a review both before and after the merger of Epinions.com and DealTime, and have at least 10 very helpful or helpful reviews, you'll receive a $20 special bonus.
- If you've rated over 200 reviews for us both before and after the merger of the two companies, you'll receive a $10 special bonus.
- We also didn't want to leave out new, very active, members. If you joined us since the merger of the two companies and have written at least 10 very helpful or helpful reviews, you'll also receive a $10 special bonus.
We were especially pleased that almost 4,000 members qualified for a bonus! Please note that each qualifying member only gets one bonus (for the largest amount for which you qualify). In order to see if you have received a special bonus, first go to your profile page and click on the Earnings Center link which is under the Details header in your Account Summary. Next, click on the Redemption/Other tab. It will be listed as “Special 2003 Bonus”.

If you write the first very helpful review on a product between December 12th and December 31st, you can enter into our First Review Sweepstakes Write-Off. In order to enter into our First Review Sweepstakes Write-Off, you have to first register your review. Please make sure you are logged into your account and and that you paste the entire URL into the entry form. You can individually register as many reviews as you wish during the time frame, as long as it is the first very helpful rated review on a product.
For this sweepstakes write-off, the prizes are as follows: - First Prize: A $70 gift certificate to purchase Epinions-branded merchandise at Cafepress, plus a set of Epi dolls and an Epinions hat
- Second Prize: A $30 gift certificate to purchase Epinions-branded merchandise at Cafepress, plus a set of Epi dolls and an Epinions hat

We talked to our lawyer about this Write-Off. It turns out that to stay on the right side of the law we have to comply with some pretty strict regulations. In order to participate in the Write-Off, everyone has to agree to the Write-Off rules.

Shopping.com has launched a television advertising campaign designed to educate consumers on the value of online comparison shopping.
The television ad is a 30 second spot that first starts airing November 17th, 2003 in the New York, San Francisco, and Portland, Oregon broadcast markets. The ads will run on broadcast television during the morning and evening news shows as well as on primetime cable networks like ESPN, CNN, Bravo, E!TV, HGTV, MSNBC, VH-1, and others. If you love to watch football during Thanksgiving, you'll be sure to see it as well.

Professional Reviews and Surveys

Epinions.com is launching professional reviews. The first group of professional reviews will be on selected audio products in Electronics and on gourmet coffee in our Gifts category.
Epinions will continue to focus on consumer reviews and our authors. We are a consumer review site first and foremost. The addition of professional reviews simply help us in our goal of becoming a more comprehensive comparison shopping and product review site. Here are a few details about the professional reviews. - We are not paying for the professional reviews.
- The placement of these reviews will be below our own member reviews on the product pages.
- You will be able to rate them. They should be rated like you would rate member reviews.
- In the future, professional reviews will be found in selected areas across many categories.
Because of the tremendous feedback we received from our first survey, we will be introducing new surveys that are less category specific and more general in theme. Those surveys will be posted here soon.

Epi Kids Contest

Who can pose their Epi kids in the most creative way? You know those Epi kids. The M&M looking fellows in the Epinions colors? We're holding a contest to see who can take the funniest, cutest, craziest, most creative picture involving the Epi kids. If you have at least one Epi kid, you can join. If you don't have one, maybe you can borrow one from an Epinionator who is lucky enough to own one. Nirav Tolia will be the judge and the winner will get their picture posted prominently in the Member Center.
Please have your pictures ready by Wednesday, October 29th and send either a link or the picture to pictures@epinions-inc.com. Nirav will choose the winner on Halloween, which is Friday, October 31st.

In addition to reviews that are submitted with less than 200 words, all Merchant Surveys ("Shopper" accounts) will be submitted as Express Reviews.

DealTime Relaunches!

In April 2003, DealTime acquired Epinions to bring the best of online shopping and product reviews together. Today, DealTime is relaunching as Shopping.com.
Over the last four years we have accumulated over a million reviews, relationships with over 3000 merchants and a lot of experience about what users want when shopping online. The result is a name and a look and feel for what we believe will become the world’s ultimate shopping experience.
If you would like to learn more about the new site please read the About Us page on Shopping.com.
The Epinions website will not be affected by this change. Epinions will continue to be the standard in user product reviews. The only change that this will have on the Epinions website is that the logo will change to include “by Shopping.com”.

New Feature - Express Reviews

The engineers in Brisbane have been working hard on a new feature that we hope you all will like. The feature is Express Reviews. The basic idea is that an Express Review will be a short, concise review that sums up a reviewer's experience quickly. A single Express Review would likely not contain enough information for a shopper to make a buying decision. Express Reviews will be useful to consumers in aggregate. They will be used by consumers to back up what they have learned from the Reviews.
The major differences in reviews are: - Length. Express Reviews are at least 20 words and less than 200. Reviews contain more than 200 words.
- The Bottom Line. Express Reviews do not include The Bottom Line.
- Visits. Visits are not tracked on Express Reviews.
- Income Share. Income Share is not distributed to Express Reviews.
- Rating. Express Reviews are rated Don't Show/Show rather than from Not Helpful to Very Helpful.
- Rating Guidelines. Since Express Reviews are on a different rating system we have revised the rating guidelines.
- Placement. In a list of reviews on a product, Express Reviews are always listed after all the Reviews are listed.
We are doing some final testing and will launch this feature soon. When it launches you will notice a change to the process of submitting a review. We have changed it to a 3-step process. The first step is the body of the review, the second the ratings and bottom line, and the third is the preview step. A member will not need to choose whether they want to write a Review or Express Review, it will just be based on the number of words entered.
Some other information that you might be interested in: - We have added all the product reviews that were written on DealTime and added them to Epinions as Express Reviews. You will find these throughout the site mostly on Electronics and Computer products. Please rate them just as you would rate other Express Reviews.
- There will be a change to the ways that a list of reviews is displayed on a product page to facilitate the display of Express Reviews.
- Reviews submitted before the launch of this feature will not be affected by this change. For example, if a Review submitted last week had 150 words it will not become an Express Review when this feature launches.
- Express Reviews will not be available in Online Stores and Services at this time. They will be launched in this category in the next few weeks. We are sorry for the delay.

Another 3 month term is over for the Category Leads. There will be a few changes for the next term: - Owling is stepping down as Category Lead in Books. Owling was part of the triumvirate of leads in that category and will be sorely missed.
- Amykhar is changing categories. Amykhar is moving from Computers to second Joubert as Category Lead in Online Services.
- Nc10 is going to be taking over as the third lead in Computers.
- We are currently interviewing for new Category Leads in both the Books and Sports and Outdoors (yes, we're still looking) categories. Please send your nominations to epi_nominations@epinions-inc.com.

Time sure flies when you're having fun. The fifth 3-month term for Category Leads has been extended until the middle of the month (whoops) as we didn't set our alarm to remind us that we needed to start a new term for Category Leads. However, we would still like to give all members an opportunity to give us feedback on how they feel the program has been going over the past 3 months. DealTime/Epinions Featured in Business 2.0

DealTime/Epinions was featured in an article on Business 2.0 by Rafe Needleman. In the article Needleman notes why the DealTime and Epinions merger is successful. He writes: DealTime does a good job with comparison shopping, but before buyers get to that stage, they need to decide what they want to buy -- and that's where Epinions comes in. DealTime and Epinions were both profitable before they merged, and together they form an appropriate link between information gathering and purchasing. Needleman also talks about the passion Epinions' writers have. He writes: Of course, with community reviews, you rarely get the balanced perspective of a professional reviewer. But you do get passion and sometimes surprising depth, largely because the reviews are written not for money, but for what Nirav Tolia, the founder of community-review site Epinions, calls "egoboo." Short for "ego boost," the term refers to the pride people feel when they share opinions that might help others.

Merchant Surveys

Epinions has launched a new feature with the help of merchants who have their products listed on Epinions. The feature is called "Merchant Surveys" and will allow us to collect information from people who have purchased something from a merchant's website. It works very much like the BizRate surveys program that many of you might be familiar with.
The way these surveys are listed on the site might be slightly confusing. All of the responses to the surveys are attached to one member. That member is named by taking the merchant's name and then appending "Shopper" to the end of it. Here is an example of a survey review.
We will be changing the look and feel of the profile page for the merchant survey responses to try and alleviate any confusion.

Epinions "Meet and Greet" in Orlando, FL

On the evening of Saturday, June 28th, we will be hosting the first in a series of Epinions "Meet and Greet" gatherings in Orlando, Florida. We are still sorting out some of the details, but we wanted to announce it as early as possible. We hope everyone in the area can make it! Garrett Gonzales and Alexis Johnson will be coming out from California for the occasion.

Another 3 month term is over for the Category Leads. There will be a few changes in Category Leads for the next term: - Tombarnes will most likely not return for a fifth term as a Travel Category Lead. Tombarnes has been a Category Lead in Travel for a full year and we are very thankful for his hard work.
- Diverpam is also stepping down and will not be with us for the next term. Diverpam has been a Category Lead in Sports and Outdoors most recently and before then, was a Category Lead in Travel. Thank you to Diverpam as well for her hard work in both categories.

Epinions Reviews on DealTime

We have almost completed the first step in the process of integrating Epinions and DealTime. Beginning next week, Epinions reviews will appear on DealTime. Below are a few details about the integration that will hopefully answer many of your questions: - At first, reviews will only appear in the DealTime Computers and Electronics categories.
- Reviews will only appear if we have matched our product with one of their products. In some areas in Computers and Electronics this has not been completed. Therefore, some reviews will not be available on DealTime.
- We will be tracking all visits to the reviews available on DealTime and updating your accounts exactly like we do for visits on Epinions.
- Visits to the reviews on DealTime will be factored into the monthly Income Share distribution as well as Most Popular lists.
- Only reviews which are available to logged out users on Epinions will be available on DealTime.
- We are only sending changes, such as new reviews, edited reviews, etc., to DealTime on a daily basis. Therefore, changes that you make to your content will not appear on DealTime immediately.
- At this time all product reviews which were submitted to DealTime have been removed. They will be integrated back into the site at a later date.
- All product reviews for both sites will now be written on Epinions. (At this time, Online Store reviews will still be submitted to both sites. We are working on this integration and in the near future all review writing will be done on Epinions.)
We will be holding a chat to discuss any questions about this integration, as well as to discuss other aspects of the acquisition. The chat will be held Monday, April 21st from 5:30-6:30 PDT. DealTime Signs Definitive Agreement to Acquire Epinions

Today we announced that Epinions has signed a definitive agreement to be acquired by DealTime, a leading online shopping search engine. The deal is subject to standard closing conditions including regulatory and shareholder approvals.

Third Term for Category Leads

Another 3 month term is over for the Category Leads. There will be a few changes in Category Leads for the next term: - Kcfoxy and Gungian will not be returning for another term. We are thankful for all the hard work they have done, and look forward to their continued involvement with Epinions.
- Madtheory will be the new Category Lead in Music.
- SurgRN911 will be the new Category Lead in Hotels & Travel.
- We will be dividing Home & Garden and Pets. Ladysmom will be taking on Pets by herself. Pogomom and mind-full (a new CL!) will share the duties in Home & Garden.

New Feature - Hyperlinks in Reviews!

We have received many suggestions that it would be helpful if authors were able to link to other pages on Epinions within their reviews. We agreed that this would be a very useful feature for authors who are comparing products, or suggesting another review to read. As of this evening, authors are able to include hyperlinks in their reviews.
Please Note: Only links to pages on Epinions will work, links to other sites will remain as text only. Also, reviews posted prior to this change will be updated in a few weeks so that old URLs will be hyperlinked. Please read the FAQ for more details on how to include links in your reviews.
Feedback on the Category Lead Program

The third 3-month term for Category Leads is over at the end of January. We would like to give all members an opportunity to give us feedback on how they feel the program has been going over the past 3 months. The feedback that we have received in the past was very helpful and enabled us to improve the program. For the next week, we would like to gather both positive and negative feedback from you on both the program as a whole as well as individual Category Leads.
