Dearest Epinions Community,
In the past six years, Epinions.com has become a benchmark community on the Internet. Our members have stayed with us through many changes, including two mergers. We are grateful for our loyal members and would like to show our appreciation.
We’re pleased to announce that there will be a year-end bonus for 2005! We want to say thanks and, again, welcome to the eBay family!
If you are a member who has held a Moderator, Top Reviewer, Advisor, or Category Lead badge at any time in 2005, you will get a bonus. Here is how the bonus breaks out:
- Moderators will receive $25
- Advisors will receive $75
- Top Reviewers will receive $75
- Category Leads will receive $100
Also, expect to see Income Share for December in the first two weeks of January 2006.
Hopefully the bonus can help pay some post-holiday bills or even help with a belated gift. As for the rest of our members, we tried to reward those who wrote the most high-quality reviews without holding a badge. Members who fit those criteria will receive $20.

Epinions Reviews On eBay

It’s with much excitement that we announce the upcoming syndication of Epinions reviews on http://reviews.ebay.com!
eBay has recently given their community the ability to write reviews and buying guides at http://reviews.ebay.com. eBay sees this as a powerful way for their community to provide valuable content and enhance their service. Since we are now a part of the eBay family, we have given eBay visitors access to Epinions reviews to provide an even richer shopping experience. Over the next week, we will begin to see Epinions reviews showing up in certain categories.
Epinions and eBay are still separate sites with separate member bases and separate rating systems, but you will now see Epinions reviews syndicated to some eBay pages. As with the syndication of reviews to Shopping.com, this is a powerful new partnership that will bring new visitors to your reviews while bringing your expertise and wisdom to even more shoppers.
Things to be aware of:
- Nothing on Epinions.com has changed. This is purely an enhancement to http://reviews.ebay.com.
- We have integrated 8 categories so far: Printers, MP3 Players, Camera Lenses, GPS Devices, Books, Movies, Music and Video Games. These will roll out gradually and there will be more as Shopping.com and eBay align their product catalogs further. Some Epinions reviews may not show up on eBay, even in integrated categories, because of individual product matching discrepancies.
- eBay will show one member hat at a time, where relevant to the review. If you are a Top Reviewer in Home & Garden and eBay is displaying a Printer review you wrote, your hat will not show up. However, if you are a Top Reviewer in both Computers and Home & Garden, then your Computers hat will show up, because it is directly relevant to your Printer review. We understand that this is different than what you are accustomed to with the Epinions display behavior. This decision to show only the most relevant hat is designed to limit confusion among eBay members, who are not entirely familiar with our product categories and member hats.
- You will receive pageview credit for hits on eBay! As with Shopping.com, hits to eBay’s full review page will count toward your pageviews. These hits will be reported on your member page and will qualify for Income Share.
eBay’s interest in sharing Epinions reviews is a reflection of their admiration for this community and its voice. We are looking forward to a long and fruitful syndication partnership and would appreciate any suggestions you have for making it better.

 Dallas Epinions members walked into Gameworks and one member walked out with a brand new iPod Nano. Here are some details of the 9th Meet and Greet event:
- Bob_tomato (2nd Meet and Greet) won the iPod Nano in a raffle
- Longtime CL Gracef was in attendance

eBay Update

As many of you know, on Aug 30, Shopping.com and Epinions officially became a part of eBay, Inc. This is a great win for us because eBay understands community. They understand that the strength in community lies with its members. eBay sees Epinions as a strong asset and does not want to change the community values that Epinions members have created. Epinions will stay Epinions. eBay will remain eBay. Whenever possible we will look for smart ways share the best of each site with the other.
We wanted to give you a heads up about a new service on eBay that will be announced in a few days. eBay will be launching a new feature for its community to write reviews and guides. As you might suspect, this is a project that was in the works long before the acquisition of Shopping.com and Epinions were conceived. The eBay review and guides service is designed specifically for the eBay community to share their expertise on products and other related topics. These reviews will be collected and displayed on eBay. There are no plans to integrate these reviews onto the Epinions website. However, we are already at work to display Epinions reviews on eBay to further augment eBay’s own offering. As we have done in the past with Shopping.com and Half, we will track and report all eBay pageviews in member accounts.
As you know, we will be wrapping up the product catalog integration effort in the next few months. The completion of this effort will allow us to refocus our efforts on some exciting new directions for Epinions. We believe we have only begun to scratch the surface of what this powerful platform and community is capable of producing.

It was just over two years ago that Epinions members first gathered in Orlando, Florida sitting at a round table chatting with Epinions employees Alexis Johnson and Garrett Gonzales. On September 10, 2005, the 9th Epinions Meet and Greet took place in Seattle, Washington. Members joined together at the Gordon Biersch Restaurant Brewery to meet with each other as well as Epinions staff. They also took home special Seattle Meet and Greet coffee mugs and those loveable Epi guys. Thanks to everyone who attended.

eBay Acquisition

Yesterday we announced that Shopping.com (parent company of Epinions.com) has signed a definitive agreement to be acquired by eBay, World's Online Marketplace® for the sale of goods and services by a diverse community of individuals and small businesses. The deal is subject to standard closing conditions including shareholder approvals.
We are very excited about this news and wanted to share it with you as soon as we could. You can read the official press release here.
We know that you will have questions about the deal. Unfortunately, the acquisition process prevents us from having much external communication including chats until the deal closes. For now, we have prepared a document that hopefully addresses many of your important questions. You can find this FAQ here. As soon as the deal closes, we will hold a chat to answer more of your questions. We expect the deal to close in October 2005.
As you can imagine, there is plenty of work ahead of us. However, we are extremely excited about this opportunity and look forward to sharing more details with you as soon as we can.

If you write the first very helpful review on a product between February 1 and February 28th, you can enter into the February 2005 First Review Sweepstakes Write-Off. In order to enter into our February 2005 First Review Sweepstakes Write-Off, you have to first register your review. Please make sure you are logged into your account and and that you paste the entire URL into the entry form. You can individually register as many reviews as you wish during the time frame, as long as it is the first very helpful rated review on a product.

First Meet And Greet of 2005

Expect your hosts to be brighter eyed and bushier tailed at the next Meet and Greet scheduled for March 12, 2005 near Epinions.com's homebase in San Francisco, California. While we love visiting everyone else's hometown, we don't mind showing off ours, even if it is for a second time.
