2. Products become outdated and replaced and if fewer or no Epinions merchants carry the product any longer then little or no IS will be produced.
I can understand IS falling for older products - that makes perfectly good sense. For example, I have a mattress review that used to pay about $5/month but has now gone dead. It's probably an outdated model#, so I can't complain too much. But some products (like a camping stove) are still on the market. I actually saw one on the shelf at REI last weekend, so it's still a valid product. -Dave |

RE: Why is everyone freaking out?
Quote: trailhound The thought that crosses the mind of some of us is if our ''broken reviews'' are still drawing traffic to the site but we are not getting any credit for it. For example, reviews in categories like Outdoors tend to spike in the spring/summer, collect several hundred hits/month, and pay at least some IS. When you start multiplying out, say, $1/review by thousands of reviews in the database in a certain category, the amount of IS being diverted elsewhere is significant. -Dave
I have a handful of reviews that usually spike in the spring timeframe. The two without /review/ in the url are showing the spike. In fact the hits are above May of last year by quite a bit. The ones with /review/ in the url are not showing any hits at all for May and the hits for April are about half of last year as would be expected since the hits stopped counting right after the middle of April. I believe, since the reviews without hits are linked through Google, that they are getting read.

Mattresses are one of the orphaned categories in Home and Garden. Most of us have seen our mattress reviews die since October last year.

RE: Why is everyone freaking out?
Quote: sageandsavory We don't know that less revenue is being made or less IS is being paid. We know that there are fewer outside hits being counted but that may be another bug rather than a decline in readership.
Speak for yourself. Anyone who has checked Alexa or other search statistics, knows that epinions' reach has slid around 90%.

We haven't heard about any employees recently being let go. There is a major difference between an employee taking a new job and the employee being let go or laid off.
So which employees that have left have been replaced? According to many posts I have read, the staff has grown smaller.

Ebay bought shopping.com and Epinions was part of shopping.com. I don't believe that ebay bought shopping.com to take Epinions out of business, that just seems too much of a preposterous stretch.
Don't bet money on that. On a good day, Ebay will do what is best for Ebay. On a bad day...

(Emphasis mine.)
That's news to me. I've been an eBay member longer than I've been an Epinions member, and I've never seen a product review on eBay. Where are they?
eBay is currently embroiled in the furiosity and upheaval generated in part by their new feedback policies, which have caused a number of sellers to quit. I doubt that they are paying much attention to Epinions right now, if they ever did.

Hey Margaret, no fear. I'll give a shout out to Lorrie Norrington she's the President of eBay International. We met at the NY Meet & Greet a few years back when she was still the CEO and Pres of Shopping.com. I'm sure she'll give me a listen when I call her about reviews etc.
...Now where did I put her cell phone number?

Search for any product. Then, at the very bottom of the ebay page, click on the link for "ebay reviews".
In fact, put in an item that you've reviewed - you might be surprised by seeing your own review come up. (I love when that happens!!) |

I'm one of those who quit selling..the feedback and the higher percentage they are taking out of each sale. And it didn't help when the postal rates just went up. E-bay now really seems to be catering to all the big E-bay stores, not the little seller like me ...For those gamers out there, I just can't believe what I found when I was looking for a Gameboy birthday present for my grandson...some people are still making money and selling with feedback on the tens of thousands, but most of the people I know who used to sell stopped...
I've wondered myself if any of that has an affect on what is going on here... |

So the reviews that come up are the ones we wrote on Epinions? If that's the case, they aren't competing with us in that department, as Antastic implied. They are just giving our reviews a wider audience.
Right?

Ebay has it's own pages asking for people to post their own reviews.
There was a bit of unrest by some here when that announcement was made a while back, thinking it might use those reviews instead of ours. It seems they are using both.

You can find out if your audience is wider or not by looking at your hitcount stats here or maybe not depending on the bugs.

Well, I have had a good experience with ebay up until now. I purchased a Wii Fit and the seller is demanding positive feedback before he ships it. I reported him to ebay but haven't heard back. Paypal says they won't do anything for 21 days. We will see if I can get in touch with anyone Monday at either ebay or paypal.
It's discouraging to have that much money tied up like this. I did have someone who never sent me something and I got the money back, but there's a difference between a $20 item and $125
I will definitely re-think eb

Now that's a lot of nerve, how in the world can he expect you to leave feedback without receiving your merchandise?...I just can't understand why e-bay would suddenly change the feedback policy, it just doesn't make sense...one of the successful aspects of e-bay has always been the feedback..
This definitely sounds fishy to me...Good luck with trying to contact someone.

eBay reviews
I don't think they're even supporting their review platform anymore. It's become a haven for spam. |

RE: Why is everyone freaking out?
Quote: Penguinlady They are just giving our reviews a wider audience.
Right? Sadly, no. I've not looked lately, but last time I checked:
• eBay member reviews are given preference
• only three epinions reviews appear on any given item
• those three are the three most recent reviews, regardless of overall rating and "hattage"
Although some would say that eBay's search engine is superior to that of epinions (a claim that I sometimes think might reasonably be made for a Magic 8-Ball), it's a little strange in the Reviews department. There might be twenty or thirty different listings for the same product, all with reviews attached to them - and different reviews on every one. The epinions reviews appear on only one - and it's usually buried somewhere down the list.
So my guess is that any "wider exposure" borders on the mythical. |
