| ErgoPropterHoc's Full Review: New York Times |
The Old Grey Lady used to be the nickname for the New York Times, one of the most venerable publications in the nation. Up until recently, the paper was printed exclusively in black and white (hence the nickname) but the times began printing with color recently. Instead of redesigning their entire publication around the new color presses, however, they simply applied the color to places where it seemed useful within their existing layout (specifically, for photographs.) The change has generally made the paper more personable, without detracting from the previous feel of a no frills, news only publication.
The front page of the New York Times is very distinctive and unique. It is filled with news articles about a wide variety of topics, with enough text appearing on the front that you don't have to open the paper at all in order to get a feel for the day's news. There are a few photos on the front, but unlike the teaser photos on most papers, they are there just as much to inform you of the news as to get you to buy the paper.
Inside, you'll find more articles, written in great depth about international and national news. The writers for the Times are among the best out there, willing to go the extra mile and do the research to bring you all the news that's fit to print. Beyond the front section, you'll find Sports and Business sections every day. While most big sports fans look to other New York papers for their sports news, the Times provides very decent coverage, especially for smaller or more distant games. Of all the New York papers, the Times is usually the only one to have coverage of Ivy League football and hockey. The Business section, on the other hand, is superb. In addition to all the business news of the day, it provides quotes from the U.S. and international exchanges, as well as commodities and futures markets.
The on-line version of the Times is also a great resource. Unlike most on-line papers, the New York Times on the Web actually has a similar look and feel to the printed version.
