It was the only one for me!

Why would a stay at home mother of four children need a shredder? That is really a good question. In fact, I have no good reason other than the fact that I just wanted one.

Truth is, I never really paid much attention to anything about shredders until I read a review one day about a pet. The Epinion member mentioned how the pine shavings were toxic to small animals and how she used a product called "yesterday's news". (I wish I could remember who it was so I could give credit where credit is due.)

This news alarmed me. We had just recently received two adult guinea pigs and we were using pine shavings as their bedding. Now the review mentioned that the product "Yesterday's News" was old newspapers. Sounded like that was the perfect solution. Except I could not find any!

And this is how I ended up with a shredder. Oh, not because I went to a discount or department store with the intention of buying one. It was all because of a yard sale. It was early Saturday afternoon, husband, daughter, three sons and ME were out but heading home when we spotted a six hour old yard sale that had little left to ponder over. However, right in front of a 90% empty table stood a Fellowes DM-3 paper shredder. My gears started crankin' and I thought about all those newspapers stacked in a box under my desk. I walked up to the owner, asked how much and to my surprise and happiness, I walked away with a two dollar shredder. That's right! And I am not talking about one of those little desk models. I am talking about a full sized shredder with it's own paper catcher. But did it work?

That baby worked better and harder than I did that day! We got it home, plugged it up and I spent an hour working on that stack of papers. The very next day my husband sat at the desk feeding it three sometimes five full length pages from the newspaper! Once he managed to stall it, but we reversed it then begin shredding it again and all was fine.

Now I have the opportunity to grind my pets bedding (holding out on the color pages though) and ease my concern for their well being.

So, if you wonder, "what in the world would I use a shredder for?" Well, your guess is as good as mine. But let me say this, If I knew then what I know today, I probably would have already owned one before the man could have sold me his for two bucks. I have definitely got my money's worth and have not had to buy bedding since.

And how do you choose that shredder? Well, if you were as fortunate as I was, you happen upon one that seems perfect for the perfect price. If not, then you figure out whether you intend to shred junk mail (which is a thrill!) or your local paper. Will you want something small for your desk or something grand for underneath? Price is also something to ponder over. If there is no concern for how much you spend then hats off to you, but if your budget is limited like mine, then the size you choose may need to be reduced?

Is that your gears I hear crankin'?

Opps my mistake. It's just my 2-DOLLAR shredder!
