Don't keep your bird locked up!
Jul 21 '00
I have four parakeets (Chyna, Frankie, Rainbow, and Ava), three of which I have had for over two years. They are all in the same cage, but don't worry. It's 40" tall! I give them exercise simply because I care about them.
In the morning, all four of them come out of the cage for about 30 minutes. I let them play on the top of their cage and the two playpens sitting on my dresser. On the smallest playpen, there is a small bell, a swing, and a ladder. On the other, a vertical ladder leading onto a horizontal ladder, and on each step are colorful beads which my birds find intriguing. There is also a bell, a balance beam, and four ascending perches which lead to the top. Playpens are fairly inexpensive. Both of mine were under $25, and my birds love them.
After this, they go into the cage with their swings, perches, and latex toys (this is a bird-safe material). Of all these things, they use the swings the most. They preen, play, sit, and sleep on them and they cost about $1.50-$2.00. Buy one and your bird will thank you!
When I get home, I take them out for another half-hour with my small T.V. on (strangely enough, they enjoy game shows and listen to them anxiously!). Then I give them what I consider treats, even though the jar says it's a balanced diet, so I feel safe giving it to them. The treat seeds are always gone within about two minutes!
In short, give Polly plenty of exercise to keep her healthy, and remember to bond with your bird!
