| nuckingfutz's Full Review: 2000 Honda Shadow Aero |
After not being on a bike for 10 years, I was somehow subliminally drawn to the Neighborhood Honda dealer. My very first bike was a 1986 Shadow and the bike did good by me. Beemers today looked to muck like UFOs. I could not justify the cost of a Hog with the chief financial officer, but she agreed I needed something with better fuel economy than my truck. The Honda comes in around 47 mpg. Insurance is more reasonable than the crotch rockets or the litre bikes.
With a hefty fuel tank of 3.9 gallons (including reserve), virtually maintenance free shaft drive, plenty of chrome stock off the floor (with more available in the parts department) and jet black color, this was the bike for me. Two tone paint was available for another $200 but I'd save that for the saddle bags.
This is a cruiser and handles every bit like one. You'll look respectable cruising down the strip but don't expect to take knee scraping turns, or to pop wheelies like the maniacs on their crotch rockets. ( Can you say skin graft boys and girls)?
Thankfully I have yet to see anything that resembled the old days when I pulled up in front of the local watering hole to have rice throw at me. These bikes are built in the USA. Either attitudes are changing or the Harley owners are realizing Ohio isn't that far from York, Pa.
Now the drawbacks... A fuel gauge would be nice. You don't realize how low you run until the engine starts to sputter then you need to switch to reserve. The tank mounted instrument cluster is nice except for with a full helmet it's a little tough to see. No tachometer, but real bikers don't need tachs. However, a single digit indicator for the gear you're in might be a thought. The stock seat may take a little getting used to or chuck it for a Corbin.
