2001 KAWASAKI VULCAN NOMAD 1500 FI
I've been riding on the street for 14 years now. I've owned many bikes, including a few GoldWings and a Harley Road King. The Nomad FI is (by far) the nicest bike I have ever ridden.
Let me first say that I have short legs (29" inseam), and the Nomad is low enough to allow me to put both feet on the ground when at a stop. The owner of the dealership I purchased mine from also rides a Nomad, and he's 6'4". So, the bike seems to work well for all sizes of people. The low center of gravity also makes the Nomad very easy to handle at low speeds. The GoldWing I owned had a higher center of gravity, and was considerably difficult to handle at low speeds.
At highway speeds, the Nomad is very stable. It is more stable than my previously owned '92 GoldWing, and much more comfortable than the Harley Road King. The big windshield and fork deflectors do a great job of cutting the wind. The mirrors are free of vibration at all speeds. On the Road King I used to own,it was all but impossible to get a good view out of the mirrors, due to excessive vibration.
I must admit that I did seriously consider another Road King before I decided on the Nomad. I believe I was getting caught up in the "bandwagon" effect that seems to be going on with Harleys right now. The deciding factor was when a friend let me ride his new Road King, and then I went to the Kawasaki dealer and rode a new Nomad FI. The Nomad is clearly a superior machine. Kawasaki has really done their homework on this one. I do like the "rumble" of a Harley, but I can accomplish that later with a set of Vance&Hines pipes if I want. I certainly will not do as I've seen other Vulcan riders do and remove the Kawasaki badges. I'm proud to own a Vulcan Nomad and I'm happy for people who choose to ride a Harley. But, I'm not a "Harley Wannabe." I'm a Nomad rider. I'll ride with anyone, anytime!
By the way, I've only had my Nomad FI for three weeks, but I've already put 2000 miles on it. I can't seem to stay off of it for long. Also, I commute 70 miles one way to work each day, and I will ride the Nomad more than I'll drive my car.
The Nomad has plenty of power to spare!
Let me also say that this is a 2001 Nomad FI. The 2001 has a larger fuel tank (5 Gallons) which allows me to travel about 170 miles before filling up. It also has an electronic speedo and a re-located steering lock for easier access.
I hope this opinion will help someone out there.
