| jpwakamatsu's Full Review: 2000 Kawasaki Vulcan 750 |
I bought my 2003 Vulcan 750 three weeks ago. I was actually determined to buy a 500 LTD but as usual, the salesman tried to steer me toward a bigger more expensive bike. I shrugged off his suggestion, but eventually looked the 750 over. It was almost exactly what I have always wanted in a bike. Cruiser style for my 29 inch inseam, liquid cooled V-Twin, shaft drive, front disc brake (dual disc to boot), and speedometer AND tachometer NOT on the tank. I would have preferred a rear disc brake instead of the drum, but as we all know the front does (or should do) 70% of the braking.
In addition to the above the Vulcan has all sorts of gauges, including fuel and coolant temp. The valves are self-adjusting and the rear shocks adjustable. The seat is comfortable and looks nice. The engine doesn't have fancy chromed fins, but I didn't care about that. What I wanted was a functional machine that fit me without all the superficial cosmetics of a cruiser. The Vulcan 750 was that machine.
This is the first bike I have owned. My first riding experience was in the early 70's on a Suzuki 90 on the farm. I have rarely ridden a bike since graduating from high school. Somehow the motorcycle bug got to me and I had to have one. I'm glad I chose the Vulcan 750. There is just no other bike out there like it.
To date I have put 250 miles on the Vulcan. I ride it whenever I can to work and around town (rural Wyoming). I've only had to drive my truck a couple of times due to rain. I am taking it easy for the first 500 miles for the initial break-in period. No problems. Plenty of power. 60 mph at 4000 rpm Nice smooth ride -- the rubber engine mounts help a lot. At 483 lbs dry weight it is fairly easy to muscle around yet bucks the wind well.
I just completed the Motorcycle Safety Foundation basic rider course and recommend it to everyone no matter their experience level -- it is well worth it. I now know enough to learn how to ride safe.
All in all I am very pleased with my Vulcan 750 "Techno-cruiser". It's a nice modern bike build on a comfortable cruiser frame. This is a great bike to get me going again in the motorcycle life-style. It may be a bit big for most getting back into motorcycling, but for me it is perfect.
I will update my review as I put on the miles.
