I bought my 2000 Road Star because it was love at first sight. The long lines and classic style captured my full attention and my motor lovin heart. I have 2600 miles on it now and still can't get enough. Just prowling around, its a sweet mellow ride that sounds like a lion purring. But crack the throttle a whisker and that lion roars to life and charges into the attack mode. The beast's big muscles are bulging and ready for action at any instant. If you don't like this one, you don't like motorcycles.
Ok, maybe I am just a bit emotional on the subject. Let me be more objective.
Don't worry if you are short legged. I am 5'7" and put my feet flat on the ground. The controls are perfectly located for comfort. The saddle is as comfortable as any I have ridden.
The front brakes are excellent, giving solid, smooth control. The rear brakes are not very strong, but that's probably good because when the rear brake locks up the bike begins to slide sideways.
The bike handles beautifully, especially for such a big brute. Its easy to push into the corners and tracks great. I have scraped the large comfy floorboards on the road a few times through the turns, but I had to work at it.
The heart of the beast is the 98 ci twin that pumps out big torque on demand at any speed. The torque is delivered smoothly by the belt-drive, so there is no shaft torque to jack up the back of the bike when I open it up (unlike the Valkyrie!) The exhaust note is deep and mellow, attracting plenty of admiring glances and no painful . I don't bother the neighbors when I roll in at night, but when I crank it, its just loud enough to turn heads.
In my epinion, cruisers don't get any better than the Road Star.
