Camry Fleet Owner - PART 2

by oillogger: Written: Feb 09 '08 - Updated Feb 19 '08

Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Better styling than 2006 model. Still a very dependable auto. Tire pressure indicator.
Cons: Goofy space age dash. Touchy accelerator.
The Bottom Line: As I have said in a another review, remember the People's car of Germany? Well the 2007 Toyota Camry is the People's car of the world.

Hi, I call myself a Toyota Camry Fleet Owner since I still own 3 of them. The 1992 LE which my son drove was wrecked and we bought a 2007 Camry LE. Now we have 1996 LE that my son drives, a 2006 LE which I usually drive and now a brand new 2007 LE Camry that my wife drives. So far our 07 Camry has about 2000 miles on it. This is what my wife and I think about our new 2007 Camry. I will compare the 2007 Camry to our older Camry’s to help those who also own older Camry’s.

ENGINE - The engine seems to have enough power to pass fairly easily and to accelerate onto freeways. In the city the car will jump forward when you start moving if you are not careful with the accelerator when we first got it but the dealer reset the computer correcting this. The throttle is controlled electrically and it is a little hard to control when starting to move. Once you get moving there really is not a problem using the accelerator. My wife and I both liked the way the accelerator works on our 1996 Camry better.

SOUND - the 2007 Camry is quieter than our 1996 Camry and about the same as the 2006 Camry. We considered them all to be very quiet when traveling. You can sometimes whisper and still be heard at highway speeds. Toyota really did a good job keeping the 2006 and the 2007 Camry quiet.

RIDE/HANDLING - The car handles as expected without any unexpected reactions from the suspension. About the same as our older Camry’s with which we were both happy with the handling. The ride is smooth for the wheelbase the 2007 Camry has.

SEATS - Very firm. The seats are firmer than the older Camry’s. My wife and I prefer the older Camry seats. We feel a little like we are driving a van on the 2006 Camry since the seats are so high up but this is not true with the 2007 Camry. The driver’s seat has electric seat adjustments as does the 2006 Camry.

FUEL MILEAGE - So far it looks like we get about 21 miles to the gallon driving around town. I have not yet taken the 2007 Camry on a trip. Our older Camry’s get usually 21-22 in the city and 30-32 on the highway.

RADIO - The antenna is now in the rear window as it is with the 2006 model which a big improvement over the electric antennas our other Camry’s have. The reception is fairly good. Our Toyota 2007 LE Camry has the basic radio with a CD player. The sound it produces is better than our older 1996 Camry and we are happy with it. We feel there is no reason to upgrade the system. The radio display will provide you with some cute useless messages when you first start the car.

CONTROLS - The 2007 Camry has controls for the climate, radio, and lights that were different than the older Camry’s. We feel they are simple to use and have a very good layout. The controls were easy to operate while driving and did not really distract me from my driving much.

STYLING - The styling of the 2007 Camry is much improved over the 2006 Camry. It has a little bit of an Beamer look. This car does not look like an old persons car.

ROOM - The trunk room is the same in all of our Camry’s. You can put quite a bit in the trunk. The interior is bigger than the older Camry’s. You feel like you are sitting in a full size car. The rear seat room is fine and there is still enough comfortable room for your legs when the front seats are all the way back.

OTHER POINTS/NOTES - For those who change their own oil the oil filter is under the engine out of sight as it is with the 2006 Camry. You can still change the filter but have to do it by feel only unless you can jack the car up or use ramps. I have changed the oil in my 2006 Camry using Blitz ramps. I highly recommended using ramps to change oil instead of the touch and feel method. There is a oil maintenance oil to help you remember when it is time to change oil. It is easy to reset. There also tire pressure indicators on each tire. I'm not sure how good they since I have yet to have an indication of low tire pressure.

In summary I would say the 2007 Camry is a car you would never regret owning. After all, how else did it become the best selling vehicle for the last four years? It is not sporty, not flashy, not the slowest, not the fastest, not the ugliest, etc. The 2007 Toyota Camry is like the old Timex watch commercials and that is very appealing to
most.

UPDATE: February 19, 2008 - I did a test with my infrared thermometer on my 1996 dark blue Camry, my 2006 silver Camry, and my 2007 white Camry out the hot sun back in August. The hood on each car was 145F/1996, 120F/2007, and 110F/2007. The inside temperature was 145F/2006, 130F/2006, and 125F/2007. Since I live in the South I will attempt to always purchase light colored cars from now on.
